    These terms refer to the action of the trigger. In a nutshell, the single action trigger acts only to release the hammer or striker to strike the cartridge or cap. The action must be cocked manually (for the first cartridge in semi-autos, for each one in revolvers). Examples would be the Colt 1911 and the Colt Model P. Double action triggers first cock the action, and then release the hammer or striker. Examples would be the S&W M39 and the Colt Python.

    To add to recedars explanation, and hopefully not confuse you:

    1) Single Action Revolver - hammer must be cocked to the full rear position, where it locks - as it does this, the next firing chamber is aligned with the bore of the barrel. When the trigger is pulled, the hammer is released and drops, allowing the weapon to fire (on some single action revolvers, other stuff happens as well). Examples are the Ruger Single six and the Colt Peacemaker (SAA, Model P)

    2)Double Action Revolver - will fire in the Single Action mode, as above, but may also be fired when the hammer is down and the trigger is pulled all the way to the rear of its' stroke. When this mode is used, the hammer is retracted to the rear and drops, and at the same time the pulling force is used to rotate the cartridge cylinder to align the next firing chamber with the bore of the barrel. This mode requires a much heavier trigger pull, and is generally a less accurate method of firing. It does however, allow the weapon to be brought into action more quickly (in general). Examples are all Smith and Wesson revolvers, some Colts and some Rugers.

    3) Single Action Semi Auto - a round must be chambered( there are different ways to do this), then the hammer pulled to its' most rearward locked position, the safety released(if engaged), then the trigger released.

    4) Double Action Semi Auto - pretty much the same as a double action revolver.
