Essex Shotgun/ Pistol

Gentlemen, does anyone know anything about Essex .410 pistol from the 1930's.If so, parts source, history, anything.

    Found a reference for a Essex shotgun, but it was a Crescent Arms product ( Hardware Gun ), that predated the 1930's buy a substantial amount.

    I have an essex 410 shotgun made by Crescent Arms.It only weighs about 3 or 4 lbs.Is it possible that you have a "homemade" handi gun made from one of these??? It would be very easy to do so.I have never seen or heard of a pistol. P.S.-Crescent Arms is known to have made at least a few "prototype" auto-burglar 410 pistols.These are extremely rare with only a few known.

    You asked if anyone "knew" about a .410 pistol. For the record I'll assume that your's is purely a question and that you don't possess such... Because if you did -

    You would immediately be eligible for a vacation of undetermined length at a federal facility of their choice. That and a huge monetary fine... And a felony rap to boot.

    Unlike some others I don't believe the fed's spend a whole lot of energy looking for folks who have these relics as they aren't exactly the ultimate instrument of terror. On the other hand, I do believe that you might expect a reaction should you bring such an item to public attention.

    Your call of course.

    Interesting Question: My database shows Three Makers using the ESSEX name....
    1. Essex-Made by Crescent for Belknap Hardware Co., Louisville, Ky.
    Double Barrel and Single Shot Shotguns.....

    2. Essex-Made by Stevens Arms..Both Rifles and Shotguns...

    3. Essex-Makers of pistol frames in Island Pond,Vermont.....

    Do you have anymore information to offer? Like Names, Dates, Patents ? How about a Photo or two?...Might Help in the search....best.....

    the brand name 'essex' is one of the few that have been seen on the h&r handy gun. all the brand name h&r handy guns were 410's, another name seen on the h&r handy-gun is 'hibbard model w.h.'. cresent firearms co. manufactured a least two models of shotgun pistols in the 1930's. one under their name (20 gauge & 410) and another under the name of victor ejector pistol (410 only) on a smaller frame.

    goforth, I believe you have it! I understand the item was made in 1931 in .410.
    nord, I am so far from busy bodies that I could.... oh well you get the point.I have my own range next to the house.
    If anyone gets a line on parts I would appreciate it.

    the h&r handy gun was built on a modified model 1905 (small frame) shotgun action. all internal parts will be the same for both guns.

    actually Nord, it's perfectly legal to possess a .410 "revolver". here is the link: http://www.kimdutoit.com/dr/weblog.php?id=P1626 It's really a neat little item. My father-in-law purchased one when we were pheasant hunting in SE Kansas. Kicks like a mule but my God, talk about a sweet home defense weapon! A plus would be that, should you run out of shells, it weighs so much that you could do major damage just by throwing it!

    Actually, Tiger, the answer is both yes and no...

    On this one, though, I'm correct. These models are smooth bores. With a tube length of less than 18", that makes them illegal unless ATF exempted as a Curio or Relic. Since I have seen nothing that makes me believe the Essex has C&R status, and since the gun is most probably not registered (or even serialed), and since any chance of such expired in the 60's... You have a potential liability on your hands.

    As for the modern .410 pistol... It's rifled and bears a serial number.

    It seems to that this conundrum could be answered by the application of AOW to this weapon. Legal, $5.00 fee...right?
    I'm not inclined to look over my shoulder for ATF. I'm sure they are looking for sand jockeys > not people like me in the middle of God's country that keep to themselves.

    Nothing leads me to believe that these pieces can be made legal in the US under any circumstances. Totally illegal without C&R status.
