US Model 1878 Springfield - what is it worth?
Anyone out there have a Gun Blue Book they could use to look up the price of a US Model 1878 Springfield trapdoor long gun with bayonet? The gun is in excellent condition.

The latest issue of Flayderman's doesn't ID a model 1878. There are several other 'near' date models. I had a 1873 with the date stamping that looked like 1878. Flayderman says the 1873 has serial numbers from 1 to 80,000 and lists it at $1750 in 'fine' condition. That would be for a 'pure' original unaltered gun. Many were refinished in arsenals and otherwise. Many were assembled from parts that were available in huge numbers for decades after the trapdoor became obsolete. There is no model 1878 Trapdoor Springfield or to give it it's offical name 'The Allen Camlock System'. When you say Trapdoor everyone thinks of the 1873 .45-70. However, the first "Trapdoor" was the Model 1865 in caliber 58 Rimfire, followed by the Models 1868 and 1870 in caliber .50-70 centerfire. These were followed by the Models 1873, 1877, 1879, 1884 and the Model 1888. All of these were caliber .45-70. Post a serial number and a complete discription including all the marks on the barrel, as well as the breech block and lockplate and I can give you the model. If you can post a picture it would be of great help. Value will depend on condition. 0 -
I paid $800 for a trapdor in very good condition about a year ago, and I let one get away at an auction a few days ago that was alittle rough, but it only brought $375. Book value aside, it's worth what someone will pay for it. 0
