I own a .338Win Mag in a Ruger model 77 that I bought in case I ever draw an elk permit here in PA. I have the rifle topped with a 3-9X Simmons scope and it is clear. If I was living in a western state and using same there, I may opt for a 4-12X scope.
The .338 allows you to use heavy bullets. I have handloaded the 225 and 250 grain bullets and found the 225's shoot better.
I don't think you could go wrong with a 180 gr in the 30-06, maybe in the Nosler/Federal loads.

    good luck.....Moose

I have used both with 3-9x40 scopes. The Nikon Manarch series is very good but I would go Leupold for the .338 due to the recoil. I had hand loads done in 175 Barnes X bullets and 180 grain nosler partition for the .338 and they worked great. Very fast and accurate. For elk the .338 is a very good cartridge. A 30-06 will work but the range would need to be shorter.

The .30-06 is probably the best all around elk cartridge. It is the first choice of shooting writer Wayne Van Zwoll, who has shot a lot of elk. With either the 06 or .338, do you self a favor and buy a quality scope, the cheaper ones tend not to hold up well to recoil. My personal choice is burris a 3-9x40 is fine. I would spend the few extra dollars for posi-lock. take a look at www.bearbasin.com for low prices and good service. Welcome to the board, and good luck with the elk!

If you plan on shooting 250 yards or less then a 3-9 should be enough magnification. If you are going to shoot farther than that then maybe a 4-12 or 4-16 will work better for you. I have hunted with an 06 for several years now and I'm sure a lot of people will disagree but I don't wont take a shot with mine more than about 350 yards and that would be a max. If you check out the ballistics especially for a heavy grain 06 bullet they really drop of after that.
