Yeah, they do feel nice and slim w/o the grips don't they? The reason I fell in love with 1911's is the slim profile and the psychological impact the bore has when you're staring down it. Anyway, I have fired them with no grips and there is no danger other than discomfort and reduced controlability. Mind the grip bushings as they can cut your thumb or palm.
I have also made my own grips out of various types of wood and some hideous plastic abortions. The thin wood grips are very nice and can add a personal "custom" touch that makes your gun unique and truly yours and yours alone. Get an extra set of bushings and grip screws. You'll need to lower the height of the bushings and shorten the screws to avoid magazine interuption. All in all not a very hard project, and pretty cheap to do. Good luck and have fun!

Whats next? A ban on automatic transmissions?

Chip Mccormack makes the smaller bushings for the slim grips. Also, Brownells has the slim grips and bushings in their catalogue or www.brownells.com

You can get 1911 cast pewter grips, silver or gold color, with fancy scroll work from Brownell's, also aluminum grips; but neither are thinner than standard. I just installed the pewter grips on a Ruger Blackhawk and a Vaquero. Very nice.

    Thanks for the input.
I ordered C.M. grips right from the factory. Best price.

i made homemade grips out of brass. rounded off the edges and used lengthened grip screws to reach down and bite the threads. made them the same shape of milspec, only thicker. i did it to increase wt and redeuce recoil. worked fine. also shot numerous 45's with becklmeyer grips with thumbrests. nice grips.
