Mosin Nagant usefulness?

Thanks for all of yall's help I ordered a Browning A bolt 7mm w/boss and a Leupold 3.5-10x50, the dealer didn't have it. I am thinking of buying a Mosin nagant to practice semi long range shots 3-400 yards since 7mm is a little pricey. Do you think it will be accurate enough for this purpose? I am only looking at it because I can get one for about $80 from aimsurplus.com. Also how would fmj's work on hogs with head shots, and would they pass through accurately enought if I lined them up.

    The Russian snipers during the second world war didn't have much problem with shots of that distance and the little PU scopes were not up to todays standards.

    The cartridge can certainly fulfill your needs.

    I do not know the game laws in your state, but here in Alabama, any game animal (of which swine are one) cannot legally be taken with FMJ/Non-expanding bullets.

    Hogs are pests here, lately they have been tearing up my bosss' corn and milo fields. There is no season and no limit, and I would only use FMJ bullets on head shots but I would like to know if I could get 2 in one shot if they were maybe 5 feet apart and lined up nicely. Wanna get a lot of bang for my buck.

    I have a Mosin Nagant M-44 carbine and it shoots one inch groups at 50 yards with Wolf ammo (at less then $3 a box). The bayonet makes a difference on point of impact, whether it is open or closed or removed. I have put close to a thousand rounds through it with no problems....

    The Mosin-Nagants that you now see so cheaply on the market are old military rearsenalled rifles. They are a 7.62x54R round that is every bit a .30 cal round in performance. Having said that, the 7.62x54R's performance is debatable. Some will say it is about the same as a .308, while others will say that it is more like the .30-06. I find that it is between these in punch and performance, but I don't want to open a debate on that. Let's just say that you are getting something between the .308 and the .30-06.

    As was already pointed out, ammunition is cheap. Wolf ammunition is about what you will want to shoot out of the things. It is not reloadable, but it is better than the steel cased or the corrosive. You can get better ammo, but that is your choice.

    I have an M38 and a 91/30. Both are great shooters. They do have a bit of a kick, but it is not unbearable. The steel butt plate on them don't give very much. There are a number of articles out now about recoil pads and muzzle breaks that cut the feel of the recoil. I haven't tried any of these, but they are getting good reviews.
