J. Stevens 40 or 40-1/2 ?
Have the subject .22 pocket rifle from cousins estate. Trying to identify whether it's a 40 or 40-1/2 The only book I have seen on the difference is in Firearms 2001 edition. The 40-1/2 shows to be the same as the 40 only with a vernier tang sight mounted on the back strap. My question is, what is a vernier tang sight and what is a back strap. This pistol has a tilt up adjustable sight mounted on the back part or octagon portion of the barrel. Pictures available from vircar@bctonline.com any info would be helpful thanks

This image shows a vernier tang sight mounted on the back strap of a Sharps Rifle. The vernier tang sight that's mounted on the pocket rifle will be a lot smaller and less complicated but similar.

If the pistol has a tip-up sight mounted on the barrel, I would say it is a New Model, or Bicycle, #40. The back strap is the rear grip portion of the pistol and the vernier sight would be mounted on the top of it. The sight has a long staff and an aperature slides up and down for different ranges. If interested, I can email pictures of one or both of the 40 or 40 1/2 models. Emery
