thinking of getting one as a project. Any opinions as to which is the best made Russian, Norinco, Yogo?

    get one of each! theyre all decent rifles, with a reliable action, at very reasonable prices. if money is an object, get the yugo, its one of the cheapest. my yugo has had thousands of rounds through it, not even 1 FTF or misfire (even with crappy Wolf ammo). the chrome lined barrel helps to prevent rusting and pitting.

    and, you'll never miss the chrome bore if you stick with non-corrosive ammo and clean your rifle after firing it![:D]

    Parts are easy to come by for all . Ammo is cheap and easy to find also.
    I own a chinese and the only thing I had go wrong was 1 broken firing pin.1 week and $41 later I rebuilt the bolt completly and it works fine now.

    I just seen an add for the Albianian SKS in the last issue of Gun List. They are quite a bit nicer than the Yugo models and a little higher priced. I believe the add was for AIM. There are not as many of the Albainian ones imported as are the Yugo's

    I like my Russian SKS best. I had some slam fires on my Norinco Chinese model D sporter SKS and sold it. I hope the guy who bought it didn't get shot with his own gun. [:(]

    Go ahead and buy one, you'll love it. Just look for the best condition barrel bore available, not the exterior finish of the gun.
    The outside can always be refinished.

    I just purchased a yugo sks. I stripped it down and gave it a good cleaning. When I purchased the gun I also purchased a 30 round mag.
    It seems to be a piece of junk (Not the gun). I cant load it without ammo slipping out, and when I put it into the gun it wont feed. Is it necessary to take out the bolt. The one that requires the special tool? Any suggestions? New mag from a different manufacturer or am I just installing it wrong. Any help would be appreciated.

    There were two types of SKS 30 rd. mags manufactured in the U.S., detachable and non-detachable. As far as I know, none were made specifically to fit the Yugo, but rather the Chinese and also the Russian with some small modification. It is possible that none of them will work in your rifle, as they were designed for the Chinese rifles before the high-cap mag. ban, and the Yugos were not imported until long after the ban went into effect and production ceased. If you have a non-detachable model you will have to disassemble your rifle and remove the issue magazine, install the 30 rd. mag., and reassemble. If you have the detachable model it may not be compatable with your rifle, indicated by it failing to feed. Many purchasers have had bad luck with both versions of the magazine, especially those made by USA Magazines, which are stamped steel, and well known not to work properly right out of the blister-pak display card, and the Zytel (plastic) magazines which are known to break if dropped loaded or in cold weather. Many forum members have stated in the past that the best, most reliable magazine is the issue 10-rounder. I do have one Chinese model set up for 30 rd. detachable mags., but I went through 5 USA mags. to get two that functioned. Sorry you have a problem here; had you let us know that high capacity was your goal we might have been more unanimous in advising you which SKS to buy.[:(] But, you can always swap into something else.

    I appreciate your feedback Der. I really like the gun I purchased, We have already bonded so Im not getting rid of it. The mag I have is stamped, and detachable. I will see what I can do with what I have. The dealer I bought it from is not my usual dealer and he said if I removed the crossbolt it would work. I think he is full of it.I will be taking the mag back.
