4-12 vs. 4-16 power scope
What is the range on a 4-12x scope and what is the range on a 4-16x scope? Which one would you reccommed for a .338? I plan on going elk, bear, and many other animals hunting. For this reason I would like to purchase a scope that would be a good all around scope for these activities?
Thanks

Although I would like to sell you one of these high/mid range variable, IMHO neither of thee would make a good elk or bear scope. The max power variable scope I would use suggest is a 3-9. The scopes you mentioned are better varmint and target scopes. I use Leupold and Nikon on my .338 and they are more than adequate for the job at hand. I like the heavier duplex on the Leupold, and the Nikons come with a very distinct duplex on them. You really just can not go wrong with the old 3-9 power scopes for hunting. Just my 2 cents.

Like Boomerang, I too have a 3-9x scope (Simmons) on my .338. I carried it for bear here in PA this fall, but I also carry a small pair of binoculars. Binoculars can be had in 8, 10, 12, 16 power for the small compact models. They are better for scoping then the "scope". Remember, don't let the muzzle be pointed at something you don't intend to shoot.

I think you would be better served with a 3x9 or like I have on my .338, a 2.5x10 . I would stick with a Burris or Leupold and as suggested before, get a decent set of higher powered compact binoculars.

what part of the country do you plan to hunt in and do you have a particular area in mind ? my timber elk gun is opened sighted and my across the canyon gun wears a 4.5x14...Alot of "experts'' reccomend around 1500 foot pounds of energy for an elk and that probably means about 500 yards ( ? ) a 10x power would then theoreticaly make it a 50 yard shot with the bare eye...just food for thought !! 0
