Browning A5 or Remington 11?

I just aquired an 12 gauge "American Browning", serial # B21833. It's an Auto 5 with the Browning logo made by Remington in August 1945 (Near as I can tell).

It has a broken recoil spring that needs replacing but no parts book I have on the shelf or online tells which spring I need.

Do I need:

a Browning A5 spring?

a Remington Model 11 5 shot spring?

or Remington Sportsman 3 shot spring?

    I checked Brownells Encyclopedia of Modern Firearms for you. Remington shows the same recoil spring part # for both the 11 and the Sportsman. They state parts are interchangeable except for the magazine spring. There is also a "Long"recoil spring for both for use with magnums.The recoil spring has nothing to do with mag capacity.They are gauge specific.

    Browning also has 2 recoil springs, a standard and a long magnum.No where could I find where it stated Browning and Remington were interchangeable,but I'd bet they are. I remember replacing recoil springs in both many years ago working in a gunshop and I'm sure we used the same recoil spring for Browning, Remington, and Savage.That was 30+ years ago so take it for what its worth. I bet Gunparts could tell you over the phone-gotta be a common question.Good luck.

    Thanks Hangfire, I checked GPC's online catalog and they list different part numbers for Remington and Browning, but I think you may be right about talking to one of their "Ancient Ones".

    From the threads at Numrich, it seems that the correct parts to order are for the Model 11.

    It also seems that these are some of the rarest Brownings as only 45,000 were made in all gauges inclusive. This one is 30" full with a matte rib so I guess it's a keeper.
