Converting a 1911 from .45 cal to 9mm
O.K. so I have a couple of 45's that I love to shoot. Ammo is expensive. 9mm ammo is half the price of .45's at least, if I buy it in the 100 round box at Walmart. If I buy a 9mm bbl and a 9mm magazine, can I safely shoot 9mm in my .45? Is this unsafe, stupid, crazy, or a viable way to save money? I already have a .22 conversion unit. It's nice, but doesn't have the kick of a .45.

Nope, Breech face is cut wrong for the smaller diameter 9mm the, extractor won't work correctly. You need a 9mm slide and ejector,bbl, mag, bushing and probably a lighter recoil spring.

At the very least you're going to need the following.
1), Either a .38 Super or 9mm Slide, with standard internals.
2), Barrel chambered for 9mm.
3), Either a 9mm or .38 Super ejector.
4), 9mm magazine.
I've converted a number of .45's using the above components. It works but expensive, considering the price of the above parts.0 -

If your talking about new parts, it's going to set you back $400 at least.
It's your call, personally I would't do it again if I had to do it with new parts.0 -
Yeah, sounds pricey. Will look for a used slide, bbl, ejector, etc.

If you don't like the cost of shooting a 45,sell one and buy a 9mm-Bob

If you shoot a lot, I think you'd be better off putting the money into reloading equipment and components. A Dillon Square Deal-B press sounds like the perfect solution for you.
New ones direct from Dillon are under $300 delivered. Ya might even find one on auction for less....[8D] Add in the cost of brass, bullets, powder and primers, and you'd probably still have less invested than you'd spend to get your gun converted to shoot cheaper factory ammo. [;)]

Reloading's a fantastic idea, but I have critical space limitations. I'll have to kick this one around a bit.
