    The Browning A Bolt came in .284 also the Micro Medialion .
    The mod 81 BLR was also chambered in .284,I had one. I have a Winchester Mod 100 semi auto in .284 I this is my personal hunting rifle.

    I would ask a couple of other questions first before trying to decide which action.

    What is the purpose of the rifle, what will the major use be?

    That question will also answer the question, what weights of bullets are most appropriate?

    The reason for this is that certain practices such as long range target or hunting usually use the heavier and therefore longer bullets when shooting. Normally, the short actions are not conducive to using the longer bullets efficiently in the .284 case as we all have found out. The SA has to have the bullets intruding significantly into the powder space when loaded for feeding from the magazine. Therefore, you don't get the performance from a SA that you could from using an intermediate length or long action.

    But, if you want to use a SA, you can use the Rem. 700 with a Wyatt magazine box from Brownells that lets you extend the OAL to 2.950". Or you can just use a long action and set your OAL to fit the chamber. Remember to have your gunsmith measure the cartridge length before cutting the chamber and have your chamber throated for the length that you want and still feed from the magazine.

    The Winchester magazines are slightly longer than the Remington and the Montana Rifleman action can be had with a 3.0-3.1" magazine box. Check with Dan at Montana Rifleman first to see what parameters they use for the extended magazines.

    I don't want this to turn into a book, but I will add that you can start with a Mexican Mauser or a CZ-29 Mauser which are "intermediate" length Mausers and are suited to using the .284 cartridge. The rails, ramp and box will need some minor modification but so do most of the other receivers since the .284 is fatter than our standard .308 based short actions.

    If your budget allows, I would look into some of the Semi-Custom makers such as Cooper or Nesika Bay. I know that these 2 build rifles with receivers and boxes matched to the .284 cases. There are other solutions also but this should get you started. Ask if you want more.

    there were a pair of montana actions on accuratereloading a few days ago for a real good price,..stainless too!!! FYI

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
