Universal M1 Carbine any good?
my local dealer has a used one (looks to be at least VG condition). are these rifles any good. he only wants 250 bucks for it so im a little wary. any help is obliged.

You usually get what you pay for. Universal carbines are a mixed bag--some o.k., but many not very good. The earliest ones were the best and the closest to the G.I. version, but as time went by they redesigned the rifle a couple of times until eventually almost no parts would interchange with the original M1. Perhaps some carbine is better than no carbine, but I believe you'd be better off to save your money until you run across the real thing. 0 -

A good functional Universal M-1 Carbine makes a fun shooter. No Collector value, but wasn't ever made to have any. If you want a "Collector Grade" carbine.....this is not it! If you just want one to plink with, most folks that own them seem to have pretty good luck and enjoy their Universals. I have heard a lot of comments both for and against. I don't have any personal "hands-on" experience of my own and "heresay" doesn't always reveal the exact truth./
Price wise, the gun you are talking about is around the Blue Book value, but have seen some priced at twice that.....but they don't sell. You can always get that much for it if it is decent and functional. Good Luck!

I have a full size Universal carbine and a cut down version they marketed as the "enforcer". Both work good with FMJ ammo or military surplus ammo, not so good with lead tip type ammo. The "enforcer" model is kinda neat looking but very LOUD and not the most practical firearm in the world. I used the full size Universal .30 carbine to drop a 250 plus pound wild hog with a single shot to the neck area. My carbine is an older one. For $250.00, it sounds like a pretty good deal.

It's like buying a tire with a bubble in the sidewall: You may get a lot of mileage at a low cost, but, if it fails, it can kill you.
The greatest problem with later Universals is that the poor design, combined with production shortcuts, results in a gun that can fire out of battery; i.e., a round can go off without the bolt being completely locked. The resulting failure can cause death/serious injury to the shooter or bystanders. This CANNOT happen with a USGI carbine, but it sure can happen with a Universal.
You can get a REAL USGI carbine on the GB auctions in the $350-500 range; why take a chance?

I haven't had mine very long,so I haven't
"played" with it much yet,but so far so good.
Mine is the folding wire stock model(maybe
aftermarket)and really is a hoot to shoot!
Probably gave too much for it($340)but when I
first saw it,the little "gotta have it" demon
won.[^]

most respected sirs, i have the agi video on the m1 carb. the fellow cautions that some commerical guns lack proper heat treat on piston, that leads to peening of this part or possibly op rod. i would recomend you inspect this area where 2 meet for any signs of trouble before you buy.regards. dux 0
