Remington -vs- Savage

Back in August I bought a Remington model 700ADL youth, (20"bbl.) chambered in 308 Winchester with hopes that I could build the ultimate pack rifle. I installed a Bell and Carlson fiberglass stock to achieve proper length of pull and mounted a Bushnell Trophy 3-9X33 on Leupold turn-in rings. I went to the range with some factory ammo and discovered that no matter how I fine tuned the scope the best group I could get out of the rifle was 6-8" at 100 yards. I noticed that when I shot the gun I could feel the thing shudder as the bullet went down the bore. The barrel was free-floated in the stock. I built up some handloads and went back to the range where I was able to shrink the group to 4-5", but always had a flyer out there at 8 or 9". Really strange. I hunted with the rifle during bear, early buck, and late buck seasons. I missed a 275 yard shot at a nice bear, a 200 yard shot at a masher 4 point, and a 150 yard shot at a nice 2 point. I was beginning to doubt my abilities so I took my Savage model 10 20" heavy bbl. 308 to the range low and behold sub-moa at 100 and 1" at 200. I have hunted for 25 years using Winchesters, Marlins, and Rossi copies. I have grown accustommed to critters expiring when I pull the trigger. I took my "purfect" Remington back to the selling dealer who gladly traded me straight across for a Savage 111 in 7mm Remington Magnum with a cheap Simmons 3-9X40 8 Point scope. With Hornady factory 162grn. loads I was able to put the rifle on the paper and dial the group in to less than 7/8" at 100 yards with less than a half a box of ammo. Two days later I took a nice 5 by 6 whitetail buck at 200 yards, one shot, bullet went right where I pointed it. This is the second Remington 700 I have owned that I have had problems with and there will not be a third. For the money, Savage is the way to go!!!

    Wrong board for this post, it should go on the general discussion board. BUT, you alter the rifle and then blame Remington?

    HeDog. I just got done reading a bagillion posts on how crappy the Remington 710 is on this board. I wanted to add my experiences and my 2 cents for those who are out there still looking for a good cheap hunting rifle. Next time I'll go general!

    i can see that Remington rifles don't like you , "lol" , 1 person to experience so many problems w/ the same Company is hard to believe i have to wonder what with all the alteration made on that poor 700 if it had anything to do with the fly'ers, stock work is tricky .....Good luck w/the Savage... they make a fine Gun as well

    If the rifle shudders,...you have a mechanical problem. I would inspect the action screw holes to be sure they are not oversized. I would check the barrel to be sure it is tight,..and finaly, I would take a caliper to the bore to determine that the groove diameter is in fact a .308" diameter.

    The stock it wears now,..is no better than the one that came off of it. Try the original stock.

    I have heard of remington problems,..but have heard of savage problems as well. I have yet to shoot a 700rem that won't do 3/4" with proper factory ammo,..and "one ragged hole" with properly loaded hand loads. Just my experience. I say your gun has a mechanical issue,..find it and the groups will improve dramaticaly. Even a 4.5" group screams of mechanical trouble.

    why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

    I did shoot the gun with the factory stock, with pretty much the same results. I thought the new stock would help. I understand that there are good and bad guns built by all rifle makers, but I personally have yet to experience a good Remington and I'm not so sure that I want to spend any more money to try and find one.

    i've never had a bad Remington either...not even a ole war relic gave me any grife sometimes people tinker where they shouldn't....[:)]
