Deer Hunting (slug) Shotguns?????

I need some help finding a quality deer shotgun. I would prefer a 20 ga but 12ga are fine as well. I would also prefer an auto rather than a pump. Rifled barrel w/scope or irons. Price range < 1000.00.

I was looking at the Rem 1187 12ga w/rifled barrel but I dont know if I like the scope idea. I'm worried if I will like the scope or not, or picking up a deer through the scope in the timber.

I was thinking of buying a hastings barrel for my 1100 20ga, but If I'm going to spend $300.00, I would rather put another gun in my cabinet.

If anyone has a review/recommendation, let me know.

    Well, as a hunter I am sure you realize the value of having a scope i.e. the extra time you can spend in the woods (prime time). with that aside I love my remington 1187. But I did go out and get a 20 ga. benelli for my girlfiend to shoot it is a great shotgun often I find myself taking that for sporting clays and leaving my remington back in the safe. Benelli does offer a slug gun the m1 in both 20 and 12 ga. Check 'em out.

    I have a 21" barrel on my 1100 20 ga and I have only shot slugs meant for smooth bores. I use imp. cyl. choke tube and horrible accuracy @ 20+ yds. I was not aware that you can shoot saboted slugs through a full choke, . The only time I shoot sabots is through my muzzleloader which has a rifled barrel. I thought sabots were meant more for rifled barrels?

    I use an 11-87 with cantilever barrel & scope - and I can't picture anything better. The trigger wasn't great when I got it, so I took it out and sent it to Allan Timney. Now the trigger is light & sweet and it is about the easiet to shot gun I own (well I might have a .22 that may be easier but that is different). It will shoot groups of about 1 1/2" at 100 yards (Winchester Platinum Tipped 400 gr sabot) and really puts them where I want them while hunting. Scopes are a huge advantage & you'll be amazed how quickly you can pick up game in them. There are certainly nicer, more expensive shotguns out there. But one advantage of the more common gun is the availabilty of stuff for it - like a quick easy (mail order) trigger job.

    I have a 11/87 with a rifled choke.i used that this year instead of my 870 with a full rifled barrel and a scope i like the iron sights on it

    A few things you might want to consider-
    1. All of the factory ballistics are achieved using 30" barrels. The priemium sabot slugs from Federal, Winchester and Remington all run 1450-1550 fps according to the published data.
    2. Hastings is the only company that I know of that produces a 26" barrel, and its a heavy walled unit as well. The short barrel lengths really do not get the most out of the loads.

    That being said, try an 870 (or 11-87)with the Hastings barrel, avoid side saddle scope mounts like the plauge as they tend to move at the worst possible time. If you can afford it, send it to a gunsmith to have the receiver drilled and tapped, the barrel attatched to the receiver, and the trigger worked over. The one I shot this year will print 4-5" groups at 200 yards off of the bench using Federal's Hydra Shock sabots. I lack the skill to shoot that far in the field, but its great to know that if a deer steps out within 150 yards, its going to hang from the meat pole!
