Big rifle scopes....
I'm looking for a rifle scope to fit on a Remington 300 ultra-mag. Got any suggestions? What's the biggest scope out there right now? Thanks!!

define biggest. Do you mean most magnification or greatest diameter of objective? Check www.bearbasin.com to look at the offerings of bunch of optics makers.

Slow down and ask yourself ...IS Bigger Better for what i want to use this gun for. Too many guys get hooked on the the Bigger the Better..Bigger is not always better. Read up on the mfgr optics you are considering and ask the guys in the local shop ..the older guys that have tried em. used 'em and either kept or discarded them. Do you really need a 50mm obj. ,a monster scope that will make you gun look way out of balance ,plus add unnessecary weight , for the type of hunting you intend to do, are you going to shoot at standing game at long distances , or will you be in the woods with close tree growth. where a high magnification and narrow field of view will put more trees iin you lense than Deer,It has come to be..."the American Way ..if its' bigger its' better."... I say BS it ain't cut and dried. good luck..[:D]

Chaser is right, the first question to ask is how am I going to use this rifle. Unless you are shooting at night in Europe, a 4mm objective will be plenty large. Unless you are shooting varmints or caribou, a 3-9x is also plenty, and even for most caribou shots.

The tube size will effect light gathering. If you plan on shooting at Dusk & Dawn conditions I would use a 30mm tube. The 50mm scopes help in light gathering also but are not needed unless the extra 5 minutes of light a day meen something to you. I have a 3-12X50 Swarovski PV on my Sako Warbird (150 gr bullet at 3700 fps). That is an extremely flat shooting rifle and the scope is plenty big enough. Unless you are match shooting (which you probably are not considering the recoil of your rifle) you should not NEED anything more than this. The big thing will be quality of the scope because the 300 ultra kicks with bad intentions. You need durabilty and good eye relief. Nothing less than a Leupold. I would suggest the Zeiss conquest in a 4-14x44. It is more than you need but not bad and not very bulky.

How far do you plan on shooting this rig?
How many times a day will you shoot it while practicing or developing a load?
Will you plan to use the reticle as a rangefinder?
Do you plan on "clicking" to your zero at the determined range?
Big objectives and big tubes are good,..but for specific purposes. The tube size matters little at night,..the lens quality and coatings on the lenses make a bigger difference. The 30mm tube was developed to allow more internal travel of the elevation and windage turrets,..hence the long range scopes having that diameter tube. The durability of the scope has be top notch to handle the recoil a pencil barrel 300RUM will dish out. Even worse,..a 300RUM with a break[:0].
I assume the caliber was purchased for long range hunting? If so,..a 30mm tube,..a ranging reticle, side focus, and target turrets should be considered. Hold-over just doesn't work at ranges beyond 300yds.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

I've got a Rem. 700 in .300 Win mag and it is topped with a Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x14x50. If I had it to do over I'd go a 3x9x44 or so. The scope spends 99% of its life on the lowest setting and I've shot countless deer so close all I could see is hair. The 50mm objective is really too high, although it does give an extra few minutes of shooting light which has accounted for but one of my deer.
Brand, reticle, and other features are just user preference but I will say DO NOT OVERMAGNIFY!0 -
I'm going to use the gun to mainly shoot across clearcuts and cow pastures. I hunt with a guy who reloads his 300 ultra ammo and has his gun shooting dead on at 700 yards. He has his bullet trajectory chart attached to his gun and with rangefinders, he can hit dead on at any distance up to 700 yards. I've got a 56mm obj. scope on my Browning (BAR) 7mm mag and love it. The furthest i've been able to kill a deer with this gun is 257 yards, measured with a rangefinder. I've got a 30-30 that I use when in dense woods. Thanks for the replies. 0 -
OK,..here is my take
If you ONLY take your 300RUM for shots beyond 300yds,...then the scope choices for me would be
Leupold LR M1 in either 6.5-20 or 8.5-25
IOR Valdada in 6-24
or my favorite,....Nightforce NXS in 5.5-22 or 8-32X
The ranging reticle in the NXS is second to none,..and no amount of recoil will ever cause it to fail. The second great feature is the illuminated reticle.
If you are going to shoot the 300RUM at ranges below 300yds and up to maybe 400yds,..then save your money and go with a burris signature in 4-16 or 6-24. Just an opinion,..but my 4-16 burris is a completely deadly package out to 400yds on a regular basis. I go 4" high at 100yds and shoot the crosshairs out to 350yds. At 400yds,..hold top of the back and pull the trigger.
If you wish to shoot the longer shots,..then target knobs and ranging marks are a must. I hope I didn't confuse you,...but like I said,..holdover doesn't work for long shots,..it's just too "iffy".

i have a Burris Fullfield II 4.5-14X40 with the Ballistic Plex crosshairs on my Browning .300 ultra mag. They have a hole sheet of stickers that come with the scope for a bunch of calibers including 2 for the 300rum in 180gr. or 200gr. ammunition. I didnt find the power to high at all even for a 60yd. shot on a mule deer.

With heavy recoiling guns, I would stick with a Leupold, Zeiss Conquest, or the Swarovski with 1" tubes due to generous eye relief. Not all 30mm tubes will have 30mm glass in them, prime example is Leupold's line except for their LPS models. Also not all 30mm tubes will give you more room of adjustment for instance your Zeiss Conquest with a 1" tube will have more adjustment than some of the 30mm tubes on the market including some of their own(Zeiss). Glass Quality is the most important factor over objective and tube size. Just truly be honest with yourself on what is the true purpose for the gun and you won't end up with a scope under-power or over- power. And if you end up with something you don't like; you will have an excuse to buy an extra scope, And the wives love that one. 0
