Colt 45 U.S. Army Model

My parents are wanting to sell an old Colt 45. Anybody got any ideas on the value or where to find out? They have no idea what it's worth. Thanks.

    The US Army bought several different models in .45 caliber. For starters, we would need to know the model name/number, and the serial #. Photos would be a BIG help.

    Regardless of which model they have, the best place to get help is the M1911/M1911A1 forum at www.jouster.com

    Until we can figure out what it is, don't let them clean or alter it in any way.

    I assume we're talking about the Colt M1911 or A1 here, and not a Colt Single Action Army revolver.

    Value is determined by a number of factors. Originality, Model, Manufacturer, condition....and provinance (if any).

    Originality....is it in "as issued" condition, or has it been altered.

    Model....is it an M1911 or an M1911A1.

    Manufacturer....M1911s were made by Colt, Remington, and Springfield Armory (the U.S. Government Armory at Springfield, MA...not the current commercial manufacturer). M1911A1s were made by Colt, Ithaca, Remington-Rand, U.S. Switch & Signal, and Singer. (If it's a Singer, don't touch it, don't even breathe on it....it's worth it's weight in gold!).

    Condition....percentage of original finish, general overall appearance.

    Provinance....was it owned, or is it associated with any famous person (and can you prove it). Was it carried or used any any famous battle (and can you prove it by some sort of paperwork), etc.

    So....depending on the answers, the value would be anything from about $300 (an altered gun or a mixed parts "shooter") up to several thousands of dollar$.
