Century Arms FAL
I just purchased a Century Arms R1A1 FAL rifle. My question has to do with the adjustible gas port- Is there a good starting adjustment or should you start out fully closed and go from there for the load I'll be using, which will be a military loaded .308? Will this adjustment tame the recoil and help to reduce wear to the gun by using only the amount of gas needed to work the action properly without over- powering it? Any comments or ideas? Thanks

Anyone have any input on the Century Arms FAL? I found one at a gun shop that I like, but I know very little about them. Pros? Cons? Indifferent? How well do these shoot, are they another POS, and how accurate are they? 0 -
Ideally you want the brass to drop within the first 8 feet of flight. It is not really a gas port, but rather a vent to bleed off excess gas. The bigger the hole in front of the adjusting nut, the more gas you are bleeding off. A properly set up rifle will do this on mil-surplus ammo at a setting of about 5, or about 1/2 turn back from the front sight. A century rifle may have god knows what parts so you may have to play with it. to limit wear you want to drop the brass as close to yourself as you can and get the rifle to function 100%. By getting your gas setting correct, it will lessen the amount of push you feel from the bolt carrier and piston assembly recoiling.
