Anyone know about HUNGARIAN AKM's?
I am interested in purchasing a preban AK and wanted to know if anyone had expreience or knowledge about Hungarian AK's from the 60's...
I want a preban underfolder excellant to NIB.

Believe there is some confusion in your post?
To the best of my knowledge Hungarian AK's weren't imported until the late 80's ( just prior to the ban, Kassnar Imports? ). They were semi-automatic only.
They had a good reputation as far as materials and workmanship were concerned, but there are relatively few in the country. The going price for them, reflects this.0 -
I was under the impression that AKM's were full-auto & pretty much only available as parts kits?

Yep.....got one just like that. They eclipse the 84-S series Norninco many times over...... Curious, How Much they Asking?
You will find that every part on that gun is marked with the serial number found on the left side below the rear sight. Should also be stamped "FEG" in a six sided box and marked "Imported by Kassnar Imports Harrisburg PA. Underfolders all had the prefix SL to the serial number. These were only imported in two models, the underfolder and one with a fixed wooden buttstock. I have been told there was only about 8,000 total brought into the U.S. in 1985/86 and the Ban cut them off before they could import more. The Fixed stock model is worth more because they only imported a few of them, like about 3,000 of the original group were fixed stocks. Serial No. on mine is SL 035XX. The original Wood is a very light Blonde color of high quality, a light tan colored leather sling, Red bakelite handled bayonet with scabbard, (serial numbered to the scabbard).
These are much sought after and command quite high prices, even in a quite used condition. Mine has had one 30 round mag fired through it. It is a real pleasure to shoot and amazingly accurate, in my opinion. These are the real "Cadillac" of the AK variations out there....The Best there is,......my 2 cents worth.

That would be considered a "Good Buy" at that price! There is a guy that advertises in the Gun List from time to time offering $1,375 sight unseen to purchase these for re-sale. I have seen a couple sell for over $1,800.00, although I doubt I would sell mine........ I have added two 40 round mags, picked up 5 more 30 round mags and added 4 75 round drums to the storage box, also...... I would jump on it if I were you! Let me know if you get it.......got some interesting things you can do with one of these.....see the picture. Change to Red furniture, or black, which makes it into a real "Black Widow" or whatever.

I started selling the Hungarians in 1986. Ranchero Paul has the info basically correct, although I beieve their numbers were closer to 7000, rather than 8000. Around 15-20% were with the solid stock and the rest of them were the folder. It was supposed to be the other way around and they got the numbers wrong. They only came in and were available for a very short time (1985-1986). By spring of 1987 they were already gone from the distributors. They were actually the same price as the Norincos for a while. That quickly changed however as supplies dried up and people came to appreciate the FEG's quality. Many thought the FEG's were milled receivers, because they were so highly regarded. They were all stamped however. It was just that their fit and finish were superior to anything else out there at the time.
By 1988 the guns were bring double the money used, than what they sold for new 1-2 years earlier. They have commonly been in the teens for almost a decade and a half now. They originally came with 3-30rd mags, bayonet, leather sling, cleaning rod, and cleaning kit. They are an exceptional piece. BEWARE the recent "put-together" from parts guns that are out there!! They use a new Hungerian, FEG receiver and have USED military surplus parts (and US parts) thrown into them. They are not going to be the same quality as the original all factory Hungarian made SA85M's.
The top AK's have been the Hungarian FEG, the Yugoslav, Polytech Legend, and the Bulgarian, not necessarily in that order. In regards to function they are all good, but the FEG and the Bulgarian Arsenal ones have had some of the best finishes. I still have some of the Hungarian FEG 30rd mags available new in the wrap that match the finish of the FEG rifles as well. The other brands fit and function, but just like the FEG SA85's themselves, the exact fit and finish of the FEG mags is exceptional.

Well, all you need now is a metal ventialated upper handguard and a Front Pistol grip and regular pistol grip in matte black and you will have one "Ugly Black Gun!"......Hahahahaha!!! You will enjoy it! There are none finer out there.......because they never came to the U.S. to begin with! You will find that out in short order....Good Shooting!
