    470 NITRO EXPRESS- IT'S AN OLD BIG GAME CARTIDGE. IF MEMORY SERVES ME CORRECT , IT DATES BACK TO THE 1870'S OR 1880'S. IT IS USUALLY FOUND CHAMBERED IN FINER SPORTING RIFLES OF THE DAY (USUALLY DOUBLES) BY MAKERS SUCH AS H&H. I THINK THERE ARE SOME MODERN RIFLES BEING CHAMBERED FOR IT ALSO, EVEN THOUGH IT IS OUTCLASSED BY MOST MODERN CARTRIDGES, THERE IS A GROWING MARKET FOR NOSTALGIC CHAMBERINGS AND FIREARMS.

    There's a double rifle being offered on the auction site in this caliber. Never knew there was a .470 marked Nitro Exoress. Anyway, at about a kazillion dollars, it's way out of my league! Thanks, guys.

    I believe the"nitro" refers to smokeless powder.

    N.E. Means what it says...N=Nitro Cellulose....E=Express means Smokeless Big Bore African Rifle....When Black powder was being replaced with More Powerful Smokeless Propellents in the big African Calibers...Nitro Cellulous was made into sheets....The sheets were then cut into strips and the strips were loaded into the Cartridge Case....I don't recall how many strips were loaded into the 470 case....but thats what it means...Not a Powder..but a Propellent...Somewhere in my collection of Trash and Treasures I have a Couple Sheets of Nitro Cellulose..They look just like Photgraphers 4x5 Film...in fact at one time in History they were one and the same!...

    .470 N.E. double rifles are still available from several makers, of course the down side is that cost as much as a new car. Ammo is also available from several sources.

    we sell quite a lot of .470 NITRO EXPRESS at the shop. the commercialy loaded brand we sell the most of is the FEDERAL PREMIUM .470 NITRO EXPRESS 500 GRAIN WELDCORE SOFT POINT with nickel cases. it runs about $179.99 per 20 factory loaded rounds. we also make up our own in-house custom handloads tailored to your own load data.

    i do not believe that this is being used on north american game, our buyers primarily are going to AFRICA for safari.

    i have fired a few rounds of the FEDERAL, and recoil is stout, and pronounced, but not unshootable. best regards, mike.
