M1 garand development experts, please help

where does the name 'shepard' come into the program? does the name ring a bell? my mother use to work for an old neighbor that told me his brother was part of the winchester development, here in conn.. can you all shed some light? thanks!

    Well, as far as I know, Winchester had nothing to do with the development of the M1 Rifle. The M1 was invented, developed, and manufactured at the U.S. Armory at Springfield, Massachusetts.

    At the beginning of WWII, Winchester was awarded a contract to build M1s. Perhaps Mr. Shepard had something to do with setting up Winchester's production of the M1.

    Or, perhaps you're thinking of the M1 Carbine. Winchester was heavily involved in the development of that arm.

    I've been looking into this but can't find any solid information, but Winchester M1 rifles are not my primary interest. I would suggest you contact the Wincester Museum in Cody, WY since I understand they are the repository for many of Winchester's war time documents. As Xracer mentions, Winchester had no role in the developement of the M1 service rifle, they were simply awarded a government contract to produce the rifles once the design was perfect at the national armory at Springfield, Mass.

    I have come accross some information on a certian gentleman named Shepard but before I bother going into the details, I need to know the first name of the Mr. Shepard in question, just to be sure he is the right man.

    hmmm, dont know. his brothers name was paul. lived in seymour conn. thats all i got. the brothers widow is gone too.
