Winchester mod 70 ......guys gotta ?

i asked this long time ago never really did find out what i wanted to know......i have a mod 70 westerner in 270 win post 64 ser num puts it in the mid 80's it has sights checkered stock but no floor plate, bbl is 21 1/2" ser num is 160**** i bought it slightly used in 86 or87
whats the story on this rifle? i dont seam to find any mention of this rifle in any books i got.

    So would I. Mine is a .300 win mag. Same problem as you.

    It's a Model 70A, which was a slightly less expensive version of the Model 70(I think paid about $ 125 for mine around 1976).

    What I did was this:

    1.Get a Winchester parts catalog ang list the differences in the triggerguard, floorplate, follower, etc. between the 70 and 70A.

    2.Order the 70 parts from Winchester.

    3. Find a 70 stock (with floorplate cutout at a gunshow or e-bay or wherever.

    4. Bolt it all together and you've upgraded to a Model 70.

    I did all this over 20 years ago, my .270 shoots 1/2 MOA, and I've hauled and flown it all over the continent with no problems. Shot a mule deer at 466 yards with it three weeks ago in Nevada.

    I just recently put a Win factory synthetic stock on it ($50 on e-bay) and have an experienced Ram-line if you could use it.

    well i just got off the phone with a winchester historian found out my rifle was made in 81 and is not a cheaper version of the 70 he told me that i have a nice collecter could'nt tell me how many were made though
    the westerner was its own designation of a model 70 and they have some value as a collector
    man i have done a lot of looking to find out info about this rifle and answer was as easy a phone call

    I've went so far as to try and trade mine a couple of times and always felt like they were getting into my back pocket, so kept it. Glad I did. Thanks to both of you. I thought I owned another orphan.
