Rifled or non-rifled Slugs

When should one opt for rifled slugs instead of non-rifled?

  Rifled Slugs- "longer" ranges (not much longer), when accuracy counts, in a rifled barrel

  The rifling on foster type slugs does has little to do with accuracy other than to allow the slug to deform going thru various chokes. It does not impart spin of any amount. Sabot slugs are made to work properly in full rifled barrels or rifled chokes. They do impart stabilization.
  
  Foster slugs will shoot in full rifled barrel, tho the accuracy is not like the sabot loads. Sabot slugs will work in smooth bore guns, tho may or may not be much better than fosters.

  most froster type slugs out of a smooth bore barrel will go just fine if you keep you range to about 75 yards or less,( and yes you can shoot them out of a full choked barrel ) if you plan on shooting farther than that then you should go to a fully rifled barrel and Sabot type slugs, this setup along with a good scope on your shotgun should give you about a 150 yard range , expect about 2-3" groups at 100 yards using a scoped gun with rifled barrel and sabot slugs

  Sabots are non rifled, the rifling in the barrel provides the spin just as a rifle does. The sabot is a hard plastic cup (wad) over a smooth more pointed bullet/slug. When fired, the sabot engages the rifling, starts the spin and stabilizes the bullet, then peels off and drops behind the lead/metal bullet. The rifled slug uses it's own rifling to fill the gap between the starting diameter of the slug and the inside of the barrel as the slug travles through it.
