AR-15 Type Rifle Bolt Removal Problem
I'm trying to remove the bolt from an AR-15 type rifle. I've removed the lower. When I try pulling the charging handle to the rear, nothing happens. The charging handle and bolt don't even budge. Any recommendations on what to try?

Sounds like someone didn't install the cotterpin properly or there is a burr on the locking lugs. Best I can tell you is gently, with a hard rubber type hammer, while exerting a strong backward pull on the handle side with the locking device, tap the other side of the handle to go aft.
It will come out provided nothing else is dicked up.

Are you are releasing the latch on the left side of the charging handle?
Do you KNOW that there is not a round in the chamber?
If someone has left out the cam pin then you are in for a bad time.

Yes. I wish it was that easy.

Yes. I've looked down the end of the barrel. There is no round.

I don't think that is the case, but I'm not sure. I'm an ex-Army armorer and I'm clueless ... Thanks for the reply. Any other ideas?

I would hate to have to do this but you may have no other choice. Using a 1/8 pin drift and a small hammer, place the tip of the drift in one of the holes in the depression on the side of the bolt carrier that the ejection port cover latch sits in. With the drift angled to force the carrier rearward TAP the drift with the hammer. If the carrier starts to move rearward then keep up the tapping. If the carrier seems to be mechanically locked up then I would assume that either the firing pin has been left out and the cam pin has rotated or that some foreign matter has locked up the carrier.
If it has a full circle carrier you can do the tap tap on that section of the carrier. Use something softer than the carrier.
Some WD40 or other solvent might be worthwhile. Does the rifle seem very dirty?
I was wrong about the cam pin. If it was left our the carrier would come right out. It might kill you if you fired the gun in this condition.
I am thinking on the fly so excuse the disjointed post.

Mark,have you turned the upper upside down and use a flat screw driver to pry just behind the front of the carrier between the bolt and carrier sometimes with a firm tap on the screwdriver the bolt will roltate,you could have a broken firing pin that has it bound up.If that don't do it ship it to me and I'll get it out at no charge othe than shipping.

I'm starting to think the cam is turned. Any ideas on how to turn it so that it isn't lined up with the upper? 0 -
If the firing pin is installed the cam can't be turned without unlocking.
From the bottom, give the bolt a couple of sharp raps with a suitable tool on the lower aft part of the bolt carrier (the part protruding forward of the aft end of the upper receiver).. You should see an unlocking action.
I took mine down using this method. It works.
