Winchester 94 re-finishing?

I have just been given a Winchester model 94AE by a friend of mine. It has been neglected and desperately needs help. This weekend I tried using some break free and some 0000 steel wool but it still has rust on it. I am thinking it will need to be bead blasted and reblued. Any idea what that might cost? Anyone know of a good Smith in KC? Furniture is ok.

Also, this is my first lever gun...can anyone direct me on the proper break down, cleaning and care of a M94?

    Please do not bead blast and blue that model 94! No matter what condition it is in, that would ruin the collector value of it, not to mention the beautiful look of an antique firearm! Just continue on with the 0000 steel wool, and oil it up real good when you are finished. Same for the "furniture" as you call it. It will take a buinch of effort, but will be very worth the effort when you are finished.

    IF ITS A AE MOD. I WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT COLLECTOR VALUE - GO AHEAD & DO WHAT WILL MAKE YOU HAPPY WITH THE RIFLE - MY 2 BITS

    I've had good results using Kroil with the 0000 steel wool. Unfortunately, where you have rust, you often have pitting, & nothing will cure that except buffing.

    Rebluing requires that the gun be disassembled, degreased, buffed, polished, blued, oiled, reassembled, & tested. Some parts may need replacement. I would guess that a quality job would cost no less than $200-300. It's probably not worth the money for this gun.

    In any case, your description of neglect makes me wonder if it is even safe to shoot. If the gun were mine, I'd have a gunsmith inspect it for safety & function; if it's OK, I'd leave it alone & shoot the heck out of it.

    This rifle shouldn't require routine disassembly. Just keep it clean & oiled; store it in your gun safe with a Goldenrod or dessicant pack.

    Unless your Model 94 is very old, or in a rare caliber, don't worry about refinishing it.

    After all, Winchester (and the successor companies using their name) only made about 11 billion of these things. [:D]
