Winchester 1897 Disassembly
Just got a good one! How do I take it apart? I heard there is a secret and don't want to mess it up. How do I know if it is a takedown model? Thanks, Bill

The 1897 is the first gun I was taught to shoot....great gun. My dad had to give that gun back to my grandpa and lost track after that. I just bought another this week myself.....
To breakdown, Push the pin at the top of the magazine to the other side. This will then allow the magazine to turn and pull up. At that point, the entire barrel and magazine will then turn and come loose from the receiver. If it is in fact a breakdown model, there is the pin I spoke of at the top of the magazine barrel and an extra band by the receiver. I hope my memory serves me right regarding disassembly as it has been almost 30 years since I've had one in my hands to clean!

Note that the takedown gun has the serial number on both the frame and the barrel assembly. Also, the takedown has a transverse pin (about 3/16" in diameter) that runs through the upper part of the magazine tube. The solid frame '97 does not have that pin.
To takedown a Model '97 (or a Model 12), slide the pump to the rear (open the action), then push the pin at the end of the mag tube through to the opposite side until it is fully extended, turn counter-clockwise (CCW) until it stops, then gently slide the pump handle as far forward as it will go (this pulls the mag. tube free from the frame). Turn the entire barrel assembly 1/4 turn CW, and then pull forward on the barrel assembly... it should now be in two separate pieces (I had to write this from memory, as I am currently separated from my Winchester collection for the time being)[:(]

I did the same thing. I swore I wasn't gonna grab one cause i've done it a million times. Been shooting and cleaning one[mostly M.12's] since 1961!!.My wrists twisted the bbl and receiver O.K, but dang if I was sure about the tube.Anyway , it wasn't a fair contest since I had one right here[8D]-Bob
