Ballistic tips
How well do ballistic tipped bullets work on medium game like hogs and deer. I heard that Winchester ballistic tips shoot pretty good in 7mm mag.

I just bought a 7.82 Warbird (something different) I've been loading to get the best groups, after trails and tribulations, settled on a 150 gr. ballistic tip. My question, at about 3,700 FPS will the ballistic tip perform adequately on things like whitetail? Or should I be trying to get a soft point to shoot? 0 -
They work very well. 0 -
The VAST majority of everything I shoot and load is balistic tips. They fly as well as match bullets and are unparalleled in their performance on medium size game. Just don't shoot for a shoulder unless it is a trophy which you want to mount and don't mind wasting both shoulders.
why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....

on is my little .222 mag.The amount of
damage it does is amazing compared to
other loads.

This year was my first year using balistic tips. I shoot a .30-06
150gr remington nosler partition balistic tip. I shot two hogs this year and neither one of them ran more than thirty yards. Both shots were right behind the shoulder. There was no exit would one either one. The buck I shot this year though also only ran about 30 yards but the exit wound on him was almost two inches in diameter. I have never seen anything expand as well as that round did. JustC is right they can damage a lot of meet but they take the game down. I have not tried the winchester but I have heard good things about it.

They shoot great how ever I have had some bad luck with them on deer with my 270 I shot an 8 point buck at 75 yards and got hardly any penetration what I did get was a great big bald spot on his shoulder I still am baffled how I got him I think I must have scared him to death. After that I went back to soft points and haven't looked back. This might start some unpleasentries but save the fancy plastic filled hollow points (ballistic tips) for the range or gophers. 0 -
I will use nothing else. 5 deer so far and only one made it 15 yards, and that was without a heart. There was nothing left. Other 4 dropped in their tracks. I use 150 grain Winchester Supreme in 30-06.

IMHO the jackets are to thin makeing the bullet to fragile. Barnes and Swift make better bullets,full expansion and the bullets stay together. 0 -
I will not use balistic tips on deer. The jacket is too thin. They have a tendancy to "explode" on close shots. It is either the swift scirocco or the barnes xxxor xlc for me. And my bullet of choice is the xlc. Have had total pass throughs on whitetail at almost 400yds with the animals going nowhere but down. There simply is not a better bullet on the market for any medium or large game than the barnes. Guaranteed expansion, nasty wound channels, and very high weight retention. And they hit like a ton of bricks. The only thing better would be a laser guided munition from the military.

Ballistic Tips should be outlawed, because they are so addictive[:D]
Try them yourself, and see why. I have killed deer with them in .243, .257, .25-06, .260,.270 and 7mm/08. Never had a deer go beyond 15yd or so, most went straight down. This includes some large Missouri corn fed deer.0 -

One said that he had shot a deer at 75 yards and didnt get hardly any penatration just a bald spot.
I had the same problem several years ago. The only thing that I could tell that caused it, was I hit the deer at an accute angle through some tree limbs.
The bullet hit the scapula bone in its shoulder while it was tumbling caused by the limb. The deer was at about the same distance as his, (75 yards facing at an angle toward me) The bullet was a .308 165gr. Ballistic tip traveling at the MV of about 2500 FPS. the bullet did penatrate some, but not as good if it had been a broadside shot.
Its all about bullet placement and angle of the shot.
