Browning Autoloaders History Lesson!!???
Question for the Browning experts that are out there. Why did Browning not sell an auto loader before the 1960's? I know that John Browning designed the Remington Model 8 and 81, so why did The Browning company not market this weapon. After all they marketed and sold the Browning A-5, pre/post WW2, along with Remington which sold the Model 11. I am interested in the Remington Model 8 or 81, but would like to find out why Browing did market or sale his design. Thanks

Fabrique Nationale in Beligum made their version of the Remington Model 8, using the Browning patents. This was both prior to and after the First World War. Only a small number were made.
Since the Browning Company in this time frame didn't manufacture there own firearms ( FN in Belgium produced them ) . They apparently felt a centerfire semi-automatic rifle wasn't commercially viable in the U S.0 -
Restrictive tarrifs on foreign products in 1904 caused John Browning to reconsider having his guns made abroad which caused F.N. to cede to Remington the rights to also produce the automatic shotgun (A5 and Model 11) which opened the doors for Reminton to produce the Model 8 in 1906 (F.N. introduced the gun in 1910 as the F.N. Caliber .35 Automatic Rifle) and replaced by the modified version, the Model 81 in 1936. The F.N. model was discontinued in 1931 0 -
All of the above and the fact that Winchester whom he had lots of design work for was being a real jerk about royalties. Winchester wanted to buy his patents for a flat fee. Browning had gotten the shaft so many times, he wanted royalties per gun sold. Fn was more than happy to produce his auto's and so were Remington and Savage. 0 -
