Use the cartridge that is imprinted on the barrel of the weapon. If you want to hand load, there is a BUNCH more stuff you need to know.

For general information, I suggest you pick up one of the reloading manuals from a bullet maker, like Speer, etc.

Even an old used manual will give you loads of information (please forgive the irresistable pun).

everything about reloading is science. you deal with laws of phyisics and laws of motion etc... everything is tested and proven. whenever you deviate from laws, accidents happen. now...as the other poster suggested, you need to read up on the history of the 38 caliber, 9mm, and the .357 etc... once you do, youre questions will be answered. the actual projectile in a 38 special and 9mm is indeed .356/.357. and yes .001 does make a difference or else they wouldnt have made them that way. the word 'special' refers to the finished cartridge. when you get into projectile choices, things change. read read read and then load.

I have a hard time believing so many people even consider putting the wrong/different ammo in their guns! Why would anyone want to take a chance on during serious injury to themselves or anyone else? It just doesn't make sense.

Buy and use the ammo made for your particular gun and stay safe. JMHO.

    Charlie,
I don't think anyone in their right mind would intentionally put the wrong cartridge in a weapon.

HOWEVER, as about nothing is new under the sun for cartridges since about every combination has been tried by SOMEBODY at SOME TIME, there is somewhat of an overlap. Our new fangled cartridges are sometimes old timers with a new name although practically identical size.

Reccommended reading is COMBAT AMMUNITION by Duncan Long. For those of you who read Duncan's work, this is one worth having.

I think many people that are new to guns have a picture in their minds from all the misleading movies they've see. Just can't imagine anything happening that would hurt somebody/somthing that isn't straight out from the muzzle.

Also, after reading SP's post, it made MY head hurt, and I already knew all that stuff. An astonishingly complex hobby, we have.

    ATF,
Thanks for the back up. I only have 16 posts on this board but I have been shooting and reloading for years. The 38 super is a new cartidge for me so I thought I would get some info. Some of the posts were helpful others were just insulting and degrading. I work roughly 72 hours per week and squeeze in a little time to reload and shoot. I don't have time to be insulted, especially by people whose credentials are unknown to me.
