Cogswell & Harrison value
My Father died and left me a couple of shotguns. One of them is a Gogswell & Harrison 12 GA SBS. He picked it up in Germany during WWII. Engraved on the side plates is Stephen Grant & Sons. The S/N appears to be #7001. I cannot find any model markings on it. It has very intricate scrolling in the metal sides. It would be considered rough condition, as it has had some minor rust pitting. There is a small dent in the barrell and the stock was broken and replaced due to a fall while squirrell hunting several decades ago. Is this gun worth more in its current condition or should I try to have someone recondition it, to include a stock that matches the detail of the forestock? Although the sentimental value is high, I still wonder what I could get out of this gun. Any thoughts?

The markings on your Father's shotgun appear to be very strange?
Both "Cogswell & Harrison" and "Stephen Grant & Sons" were noted British gunmakers famous for their high-quality shotguns.
It seems very unlikely to me that both of their names would be on one shotgun as they were competiors.
There are only two explanations, that I can see.
1), It a Belgian knock-off ( you can tell by the proof marks ).
2), It was a used shotgun that was sold by Cogswell & Harrison.0 -
The double barrell assembly is marked Goggswell & Harrison and gives the address (London, Paris, etc). The reciever side plates are marked Steven Grant & Sons. Would the barrell assembly from a G&H fit onto a Steven Grant reciever? The fit is perfect and dad hunted with this gun regularly until the last 20 years or so. 0 -
"COGSWELL" with a "C" is the name, if the first letter is a "G" it's definitely a Belgian knock-off.
As to your first post re the value of the shotgun. Considering it's present condition, I would keep it, as it is, as a remembrance of your father. Do have it restored properly, to it's original condition would be prohibitively expensive. (That is, if is a original English made shotgun. If it's Belgian it's value is nominal).0 -
OK, This gun is more confusing than I thought. I look back at my last posts and I have spelled the name 3 different ways. I need to work on my spellchecker a little more. Here is what is stamped on top of the rib between the SBS barells, as best as I can tell: COGSWELL & HARRISON LTD. IGS PICCADILLY 226 STRAND LONDON & 26 AVENUE DE ?OPERA PARIS. Other than the Stevens name on the sides and the S/N, there are no other markings that I can find. You are correct, I probably would not ever sell it, I am more curious about its history and value. Do you think it is possible that this shotgun is a half breed? If it is a knockoff it certainly is a beautiful one with a lot of intricate scrolling around the reciever and trigger housing. With that specific name and address on the barrel, I believe that your shotgun is a high quality English manufactured shotgun.
Believe #2, in my first post would probably be as close as we can get at this late date.
As the name "Stephen Grant & Sons" was superseded in the early 1900's by "Stephen Grant & Lang", your shotgun is probably over 100 years old and there's no we can know at this late date why both the makers names are on it?0 -
Happy Turkeyday: For Your information. Your Gun was made between 1924 and 1938....Looked down deep in My database and here is what I found.
COGSWELL & HARRISON London, England from 1770 to Date! also that in 1924 they opened a Branch facility in Paris, France, and when War began in Europe they Closed the doors...Gogswell & Harrison are still in Business making Custom Guns...Value Wise...its going to depend upon just which Gun You have....Having the Paris Stamp means the Gun was Made in France and probably acquired by a German Officer who was Stationed in France early on in the War...then taken Home to Germany where your Dad finally got His hands on it!..Your Gun is not going to be worth much in the discription You discribe it to be in...Maybe $300.00 on a good Day...If it were in the original Condition and depending upon just which Model You Have.. and what Extras it has...?
