CETME vs. FAL

I have seen the CETME and FAL both advertised at very reasonable prices. Is one better than the other? Please give reasons for your answer such as accuracy, durability, availability of repair parts, etc.

    Both are reliable and reasonably accurate. I like the mechanics of the FAL better, the barrel is screwed into the receiver. The CETME is a precursor to the G3/HK91. The barrel is pinned into a trunion then welded onto the receiver. You cannot easily replace the barrel without ruining the receiver when you cut the welds.

    I'll go for the FAL design anyday. I would recommend buying both, you can get CETME's for under $400.00 now.

    I would take the FAL. They will run on virtually any .308 or 7.62 ammo. The Cetme design doesn't like dirty ammo. My latest FAL will hit 12" steel plates at 300 yards all day every day with surplus ammo. The last century Cetme I tried wouldn't do that at 100 (when it cycled).

    From what I read, I will be lucky if my new Century Arms CETME doesn't have a problem or two. Hope to get to the range on Saturday and fire it up for the first time.[^]

    Guess I have been lucky, all my Century Cetmes (3) have been trouble free and even gobble up cheap (India) ammo. Break them in good, (200-300 rounds!!

    I have had an HK91 and currently own a semiauto FAL (G-1).

    I much prefer the FAL.

    I sold my FN FAL after buying the Cetme. I didn't like the recoil of the FN and I didn't like the black synthetic stock (post ban). The CETME's roller block design makes it a pleasure to shoot for extended periods and the wood stock is much easier on the cheekbone.

    The FN was slightly more accurate, but follow up shots with the CETME are much faster (at least to me). By filing about 1/4 inch of metal from the magazine opening in the receiver, my CETME can now use all the inexpensive (less than $5) HK surplus magazines.

    Both are good rifles, to be sure, but it was just a matter of personal preference to me. Try them both.
