Could one of you folks compare and contrast a 30-06 versus a 7mm versus a .270 in terms of shooting characteristics? Thanks ahead of time.

    the -06 may have a greater knock down power at medium ranges because of its larger dia. an heaver weight bullet, the 270 is a much flater shooter at further ranges [past 250yards] if you mean 7MM an not 7mm Mag the 7mm may have less power then both an less of a flat shooter then either of -06 or the 270 hope i don't get shot down on this but i'd go with the 270 my .02$ says its more versatile. a bolt action in a normal wood stock, i'd have to say they kick about the same. this is just lite contrast ...then you can get into what are ya' gonna use it for are Ugonna reload is it a semi auto Dahhh

    The .30-06 will do everything that the 270 will do and then go on to bigger and better things. There are only two bullet weights available for the 270,the 130 grain and the 150 grain,while the .30-06 starts with a 110 grain bullet and goes on to a 250 grain bullet. With 130 and 150 grain bullets the .30-06 will equal the velocities of the 270.

    If you were referring to any of the 7MM Magnums - they put the other two out to pasture. The Mags shoot flatter and farther and hit harder. This hits the shooter with stiffer recoil, and a lot more noise.

    Unless you may take 300 yard shots, the other two are perfectly adequate, with me leaning toward the .270, for almost all situations.

    maybe theres more.. i don't know of,, then it depends
    if you were to reload ...u could go from 90gr--to-- 170gr maybe even higher not sure on that. also the -06 won't shoot as flat as the 270 ...which [270] will equal with 300 winchester. all depende on what he wants to do with it..?
    Doug he mentioned 7MM but did express mag maybe he ment to ..? it would be superior. i had a Rem.700 7MM mag pretty healthy kick you don't wanna sit at a bench all with that mule...lol

    I concur with Mr. Gee about trajectory of the .270 and the .300 mag being similar. With 140 grain .270's and 165 grain .300's they are, but the energy is much greater with the magnum, but at the expense of recoil.
    Don't forget about the Xcellerator round for the '06, if memory serves it is a 55 grain sabot.
    ANY of these (and many others) will work out a lot further than I'll ever shoot.

    three peas in the same pod, all three will through the same weight bullet at (about) the same velocity. at common hunting ranges <300 yrds. results will be similar. .270 w/lighter bullets will recoil less, 7mm mag or .30/06 w/ heavey bullets will recoil more. you will not go wrong with any of them.

    .30 caliber has by far the best ballistic coeficient, however a .270 will shoot a lot flatter then a 30-06 all it is is just a 30-06 case necked down to .270. The 7mm mag is an excellent cartridge but depending on the rifle it can be a shoulder beater. All 3 cartridges have the capability of taking any animal in north america. Best advice I can give you is take a hard look at what you want your rifle to do pick up a reloading book and do the math. I own all three and am not partial to any one of them. One nice thing about the 30-06 is no matter where you go you can always find ammunition for it. Well good luck and no matter which caliber you choose you won't be disappointed.

    If you want the absolute best all-around cartridge (and it is a perfect combination of the three you specifically mentioned), go with the 7mm Express (a.k.a. 280 Remington). It is simply a 30-06 necked down to 7mm, and it offers the superior ballistics of the 7mm bullet, with the case capacity of either the 30-06 or 270. The recoil is quite comfortable too[:)]

    Bushnell i got poor results with the 110 gr. i did reload also for the .270 90gr hpbt 59.2 grs-4350imr/9 1/2 rem prmr./superXX case "FANTASTIC" varmit load...i call it the bluestreek. Do Not try this load in a cheap gun ....its very HOT

    Bert H is right on the nose with his post.

    BUT - For the first 6 or 7 years of it's life the 7mm Rem Mag was loaded about 200 fps. faster in factory loads than it is now. I've never heard why it was down-loaded. I load to the original velocities in a BAR and a Ruger 77 and have no problems.

    The 7mm Express (280 Rem) duplicates the present 7mm RM ballistics. - ???

    The 308 is the best choice overall for flat shooting, acuracy, less recoil, less noise. That's why it is used internationaly as a target caliber. Has the knock down, velosity and bullet choices.
