1911 American Eagle Commemorative

here is another one from the closet. I have a 1911 American Eagle Commemorative (colt)that I think came out in the early 90's. It must have been comissioned by one of those places you see in a gun book. The pistol comes in a display case and is un-fired. It looks great with all the gold & trimmings. How would one find the value for this? Any Ideas?

    OK.....I finally found it in the Blue Book.

    It is a Colt, but is not a Colt Commemorative.

    It was sold by the U.S. Historical Society in 1993. 2,500 were sold as "American Eagle Colt .45 Auto" at a price of $1,950.00.

    No current value given.....whatever the market will bear, I guess.

    The 23rd Edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values, by S.P. Fjestad.

    The latest issue is the 24th Edition, I think.

    With various "commemeratives", the factory ones are usually at the end of the manufacturer's pages. If you don't find it there, look in the index for the U.S. Historical Society.....they're the largest seller of commemeratives after the factories.

    If you're really into commemeratives, you can collect the entire set of 17,357 various Winchester Model 94 Commemeratives. [:D]

    I've got a nice "Bucksport, Maine Town Dump Centenial" and a "Ralph's Pizza Emporium Grand Opening" Model 94s, NIB....Make an offer. [;)]

    xracer- have you considered a giveaway to the person that can name say 500 or more of the commemoritive model 94's? Thats' a new twist on a giveaway, IMHO.

    Well, Dave, I might consider it....but no fair in looking them up. [:D]

    I've got a nice "Waxahachie, Texas Possum Festival Centennial" Winchester 94 that I might consider putting up as a prize.

    Mike, we still haven't been able to answer your question about value, & I'm afraid that we may not be able to.

    Now, while there's nothing official about the definitions, I've always heard that there are 2 distinct categories of fancy factory guns: "commemoratives" and "special editions". A "commemorative" is 1) cataloged by the factory, and 2) shipped to all distributors; a "special edition" is ordered by a single customer, distributor, or group, & can only be obtained through that purchaser.

    "Commemoratives" are usually listed in Fjestad's Blue Book with their current value. "Special editions", however, are usually so difficult to track that there is no one who lists their value; they are not considered "collectible", and value is often close to that of the plain version of the gun.

    Bottom line: There is no way to predict what your 1911 "special edition" would sell for on any given day.
