Remington model 81

I have owned a remington model 81 in 300 savage for about 2 years now and I have never attempted to clean it due to lack of knowledge of how to disassemble this rifle, if anyone would be able to describe the procedure for cleaning this rifle I would be very appreciative.

    I've always liked the looks of this rifle. Anyone have one??? How do they shoot? Would the 35 be the best cal to have.

    Look in Vol 3 of the NRA Firearms Assembly and Disassembly Books. The Remington Model 8\81 is covered completely.

    take this to a gunsmith, takeing down a m8/81 for a complete cleaning is not for the novice (lots of springs and parts flying every which way).

    Take off the forestock, then the thumb nut, will be exposed, turn it counterclockwise, and the barrel will come out. You will now have the receiver exposed for easy cleaning, and the barrel will be out of the receiver. I do not recommend taking apart the barrel assembly, but if you insist. Insert a small drill bit or other hardened object into the end of the barrel bushing. A small hole at the end of the barrel, Count your rotations on the way out. Be careful, because the spring is under tension. IT will not fly out if you are expecting this.. . My assembly was old, and I found nothing dirty inside the assembly..it was a waste of time. Be sure however to replace the bushing clockwise, with the correct amount of turns.. Otherwise if you will have a firearm that will not cycle the next round with two few rotations,..Or a full auto weapon which will slam fire, until all cartridges are spent. This is caused by over rotating the bushing..A gunsmith might be your ticket, because and awful DUMMY-Cut could occur...I speak with experience..Be careful..Ted
