What is the function of the lever on the left side of the receiver?

You can use the lever to suppress the shells in the magazine. So, if you've got #4s loaded in the gun, and for whatever reason you want to load a #8, you pull the lever back, rack the shell out of the chamber, manually drop the new shell in, and close the bolt, all without the gun trying to automatically feed the next shell from the tube.

It is called a "Magazine Cut-off" lever, and works just like bersh stated.

Comes in handy when crossing a fence while hunting. Empty the chamber, set the gun down and then reload.
