Need some help with an old gun that was given to me. It is marked on the reciever "soc.ind. suisse" over top of "syst. vetterlim" above this are the numbers 69356. Bolt action,, magazine in the forearm,,ejects out the top. This thing seems really tight. seems shootable. Big ole rifle bore on this hog. Thanks in advance.

    It appears that your rifle is VETTERLI, this was the standard military rifle used in Switzerland for approximately 20 years. ( circa 1867 - 1888 ).
    It's chambered for a .41 caliber rimfire cartridge ( 10.4 x 38mm ).
    It was made in many different variations over it's service life. Some have considerable value to collectors. If you give us all the data you can regarding markings, barrel length and any other notable physical characteristics, perhaps we could help you determine what exact model you have.

    Thanks for the fast reply. Here is all I have. The barrel is about 33 inches, the whole shootin match is about 51. It has a ramrod. Like I said a tubular magazine No idea what capacity. The only numbers on it are 69356 on the reciever the barrel, and on the bottom of the ejector. Thanks again. This site has been very helpful,, the knowledge here is second to none.

    I believe from the markings on the receiver your Rifle is a Model 1869. It was probably one of the most common of the Vetterli's. Seems that your rifle was made by SIG,circa 1869-1874, ( Same firm that developed the Sig-Sauer handguns ) . They made 59,000, other manufactures and arsenals made an additional 70,000.
    The tube magazine underneath the barrel had a capacity of 11 rounds, ( 1869 rifle ).

    Thanks for the info. I would think since there were so many of these ammo is available,, if so where would one get some.

    The problem is that it's chambered for a rimfire cartridge, that to my knowledge hasn't been avaiable commerically for years.
    The only advice I can give you re obtaining ammo for shooting your Vetterli, is to go to the Vetterli Rifle forum on-line and post your question. I'm sure the members, can better inform you on how to either get or make ammo.
