1903 Springfield Proof Mark

I have a co-worker wanting to sell me his 1903 Springfield. I was looking at the cartouches, etc., and I see where it has two circled P proof marks, and it also has a third P, but it is in a square. Any help with what this signifies would be appreciated.

Nice piece, in what I believe to be good condition. Any value guestimates would be appreciated as well. It looks like it was made in 1934, but has a barrel stamped as 9-32. No apparent repairs to the stock.

    The circled P was applied to the stock when the gun was assembled at the arsenal, the squared P was applied when the gun went in for a rebuild. This is probably why your barrel date does not match that of the receiver's manufactuer. Why you have a second circled P is something of a mystery, unless the stock was also swapped at some point by the arsenal. According to my reference, the 1934 production at Springfield included serial numbers 1441812-1491531. 1932 was 1404026-1425933. I listed these so you can double check your date of manufacture. As for value--depends a great deal on the condition. When you said it is in "good" condition, do you mean NRA Good, or 90% original condition, or what? Assuming that your info is all correct and the gun is in 90% condition, around here it would be valued in the $500-650 range.

    Thanks for the information. I don't know how to grade rate a gun, so I don't know what to say. The stock doesn't look like it has been cracked or repaired. The only damage to the stock is at the bottom of the butt where it meets the plate. It has had some very slight chips knocked off. The parkerizing looks very good with the exception of the top of the front sight. This area is bare metal. Some of the parkerizing is worn off the bolt, but it probably still has over 90% of its finish. No rust. Hope this helps. I know someone can't give a definition of condition without seeing it, but this is the best I can do right now.

    Well, it sounds 90%. Since these rifles were origninally blued, yours is definately a rework, probably WW II vintage. The value is still ballpark.
