wholesale gun safes ?
As you may guess, I recently lost most of my collection (and other stuff) to someone I do not know.
I bought a safe from a sporting goods store in town for items not discovered. It was about $ 900 after taxes, delivered and set in my home. I am shopping for another, possibly larger safe now. Any leads for a wholesale purchase would be appreciated.

I spent five years pricing safes and looking into the bragged up hype of each manufacturer. One thing I found was that there is more hype than truth. Plus--after a company builds their special safe to be tested--there is no governing body to oversee that the rest of their safes are built the same way. They spend 10k to test a safe so they build special ones to test then back to the norm on production runs.
Interestingly, many employees building safes move from maker to maker which makes things interesting. After 4-5 years of researching I heard some good information.
I picked four comapanies and started a question and ask campain that lasted several years. Everything I was told about a safe I then took right back to that maker and aksed to be explained. I learned alot--a whole lot.
Finally--I ended up with a Halls safe from Loomis Ca. Everyone is built custom. Steel is thicker (weight is a deterrent). Only 200.00 dollars to change size from the standard sizes. My previous safe, 500lbs could be easily trucked off by 2-3 big guys--not my new one.
Bigger item with a Halls is that it is impossible to slam the door on a Halls. The door is that tight. Another big item that I called him on immediately is the door seal--it is rope like on a wood stove. Guess it works on a wood stove--should work on a safe. The other makers have the plastic seal that is supposed to expand--thinking in my mind--plastic melts.
I know a guy whos huose burnt down with no fire response. In his safe he had guns money floppy disc etc. He lost nothing--not even his floppy disc. Ironically--that safe is now on display at Halls in Loomis
The owner is pretty proud to deal with on the phone but once you get to know him and see the quality of the product you'll be impressed.
My safe is 72x48x30, all 1/4 body, 3/16 on the door, electronic lock--biggy plus--the gun rack swings out--oh yea--really cool, oak file cabinet drawers. Got it for 4k delivered. They are pricey but it aint gonna burn and it will take the football team to steal it.

After that great response from SKYMAN, I'm almost embarassed to post this. If you live in the Chicago area, HOMAK, maker of tool boxes and various "degrees" of safes, has an outlet store around here. You can get some fairly decent gun safes and a whole lot of crappy ones at a really good price, depending on what you're looking for.
Tool box wise, I got a top and bottom that retails for about $900.00 for 350.00 brand new.
Gun safes and drawers, cabinets, etc. vary in price but they're about 1/3 the price of retail, "You take it away." Occasionally, they have big sales for factory overruns or returns. These will go for even less.

I bought a Liberty, my secone one. All I know is that I need a safe and I want something decent.
The one I got is UL inspected and fire rated for 1/2 hour.
I did not care so much about the fire rating as I did the theft deterent factor.
One of my liberty safes has the rope stuff on the door, the other has the plastic seal.
I don't really care about how they work, as long as they DO work!
Sorry for your loss, but does your post imply they took the whole safe with the contents?
Wow! The liberty weighs in empty at 800.00 lbs. Any good, HEAVY safe should do what you need it to.

[8D]The best I've come across is the Bear. There has to date never been a Bear fire rated safe that has been broken into. Mine weighs over 800lbs and is bolted down to a concrete floor. Whatever you get, bolt it down. Even the el cheapo Homak cabinets are better than nothing, and harder than they look to break into. If someone breaks into your gun safe, you can bet that it is someone who knows what you've got. 0 -
skirtchaser just gave you some important info that most ignore. BOLT IT DOWN!!!!! Trust me a 800-1000 pound safe and contents are not a problem for one person to move. Safes do help keep the honest people honest though. Want to make or add fireproofing to your safe? Just keep adding additional plys of gypsum board to the interior and an asbestos rope gasket (available at most appliance parts houses).

If fire rating isn't a priority, check out zanottiarmor.com...Zanotti safes break down into 6 pieces to make it easy for us who have narrow halls & doorways. Door fit is right there with the best of them. Multiple interiors are possible. Mine is set up for 52 long guns and 5 shelves about 2x21/2. Super nice folks on the phone even though I got mine used. They even sent me a new interior setup and trusted me to send the money! Keep in mind that ANY safe can be torched into.

I had a safe made by a maker of dump truck bodies. One eighth inch thick plate, half inch by three reinforcement around door itself and door opening inside safe. Just a big iron box. Not pretty but strong enuf to slow down a theif. Saved a bundle. 0 -

And to Madmarc0, I did not have a safe. I was just a dumb old guy that had the city grow out to him over the years.
A few common guns in a rack, others in closets. All with trigger locks, but nothing locked up.
If I had added up the value, maybe I would have bought a safe sooner.
I can replace half of it .... its the loss of the hand-me-downs that hurt the most. I was irresponsible, so (most of) the hand me downs start over.0 -
How critical is the fire proofing part? What happens to a gun in a non-fireproof safe as compared to a fireproof safe? Are they totaled? Also, 1/2 hour fire rating? Seems kinda short...
