Headstamp RWS 40 1h 19. Tip is .510 dia and 2 inches long. It looks
like a small artilary projectile with a threaded 2 piece tip. Painted Yellow and marked AA 7f 1940 and symbol I cant make out. The 2 piece tip has AA 35 and 2nd { have 2} has everything the same but tip says AA 50. Has copper ring that is.535 dia.I think maybe antitank round ? Overall length 4.2 inches. It really looks like art shell. Got any ideas? J

    Yeah, sounds like aircraft cannon or artillery/AT round. Yellow tip denotes it was filled with HEI. Has it been disarmed?

    The only German cartridge that I could find with dimensions that are even remotely similar to yours, is for the Rheinmetall-Borsig, Model 131, aircraft machine gun. ( 13mm x 64B mm ).
    As the previous poster noted the projectile contains HIGH-EXPLOSIVES with a TRACER component. Hopefully it's been deactivated sometime in the past. You under stand it's 63 years old now and the stability of the components that make up the EXPLOSIVE CHARGE might have deteriorated and become unstable. BE FREAKING CAREFULL WITH IT!!!

    Hi, what I would call the fuze {2 piece section in front} is intact. The main body looks as if material removed. There is a plug of some type in the rear that is also intact. I assume this is the tracer portion? Have 2 projectiles of this type. I also have a third that is one piece steel unpainted. This has an ubdisturbed plud in back. Got some 7.92 with them and one the back 3/4 is black. Observation projectile?

    Your 7.9 does sound like a B patrone. The top 10mm should be tomback (copper color). These are pretty safe, just don't throw into a fire or anything like that. Fairly rare cartridge, go for about $5 and up each.

    Your aircraft cannon shell may be a tracer or it may be incendiary. Either way, that's not much of a hazard as long as the HE has been removed.

    The projectiles with plugs in the rear need to be looked at. There is a device called a base detonating fuze that is put into the rear so that the projectile can penetrate armor before detonating. It is an inertia type fuze (usually) with a set-back safe mechanism. Quite safe to handle but if live, needs to be rendered safe.

    The steel 1 piece projectile is marked bmv 3a 41. Did not see it before. Thank you very much for help.

    The only thing I can add to the excellent data you already have been provided is that under GCA 68, the 13mm shell, if live, must have the live elements removed to be legal (to say nothing of *SAFE* as noted above). This cartridge is outside my normal collecting niche so I'm not familiar with the internal construction details of the projectile. However, if you post this question in either of the following forums, it will be seen by some true experts in this field who can give you the appropriate guidance.
