Can anyone tell me where i can find out what year an colt offical police 38 was made?

    Very Nice Year.......According to your Serial Number, your gun was made the last working week of the year of 1930. I say the "last working week" because Colt generally closed down for "Long" Holidays and I think they closed sometime before Christmas and didn't resume production again until after New Years in January of 1931. Hard to pinpoint whether it was made in November or December of 1930, but definitely within that period. Hope that helps! Enjoy it, they are a very fine revolver!

    All Colt can tell about most of its products is when a particular gun was shipped, not when it was made. I have several Colt guns with serial number ranges and shipping dates quite a bit out of sequence.

    Thanks for the info. I bought the gun at an estate auction,it has york Pa. police & the officers name engraved on it. Also come with the orignal box and a pair of handcuff's.

    Too bad about the names on the gun. That will hurt its value to most buyers. If the names were put on at the factory, that will help some, but if added after the gun left the factory, they will, in my opinion, really hurt the value.

    I steer well clear of Colt topics when our two resident Colt experts give there opinions as to historys and values but if this were my own Colt I would write a brief letter to the York, PA police department asking about the officer who's name appears on the firearm. York has a population of around 45,000 so it is not a huge city and there is a good chance that they may well have the records of their officers (at least the public records) available and would willing to help you. Who knows, that cop could have become the chief of police for York and might be alive and still living in York today at age 90, still dropping in at the station once a month just to keep in contact with his own past. I've seen these types of things pan out and I think it would be worth risking a 37 cent stamp because if documented these types of LEO firearms can bring big premiums from collectors at auction time.

    Mark probably gave you some great advice. There are collectors that desire "marked" guns so there is a market. However, as Judge Colt pointed out, it may not be a high dollar market and its possible the value of the guns may suffer. It would be interesting what you might find out about the prior owner and the history associated with it.

    Post what you learn about it.....it would be of interest to a lot of us.
