bear hunting
I am interested in hunting bear next year. I don't have a lot of money to spend on this trip so it has to be unguided. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go and what areas are the easiest to get drawn in. I have been looking at somewhere in arizona but I don't have a preference.

Here in Minnesota there are areas where you can buy a permit over the counter. Bears are numerous enough to be considered pests in some locations (in northern MN). Chas 0 -
Chances are slim to none for the draw in Arizona Spring Bear hunts. Would suggest checking into such a hunt over in New Mexico, if you live in this area. Tags are over-the-counter. The Gila National Forest along the western NM state line offers good hunting, as well as the Gila Wilderness north of Silver City in the Gila Hot Springs area. You can get info and even buy your tags over the internet from www.gmfsh.state.nm.us

I noticed you live in MO. You can plan a cheap bear hunt by going down to the Arkansas Ozarks during most of December. A 5 day license is approx $150, and a full season license is around $250, this also is good for Deer and Ducks.
If you camp, the only expenses you'll have are gas and the license (you gotta eat anyway). I don't think you can go out-of-state bear hunting much cheaper than that.
What are your chances of success? I have no clue.

I think I've narrowed it down to the fall season in either arizona or Idaho. I was reading on Idaho's web sight and if you draw a buck tag you can actually use it on a deer, beer, or mountain lion as long as they are in season in the unit you are hunting. Now I just have to find a place to go.

You might want to consider Northern Minnesota if you really want to kill a bear. Lots more bears and they are a pest. Tougher to find in the west. 0 -
If your ever in the Alberta area, you can buy two tags at 13 bucks a peice { Canadian, so 1 dollar for you american folk [:D] } I believe non resident is more, but not much.

All western states are a "draw". Be ready in January to submit your funds. Go to the state of choice and ask for the procs. Ready yourself
that you be an out of state hunter-slim chances. Why do you want to kill a bear? I have hunted for forty years-all buck deer-four points or better (Western Count). In my opinion, bear hunting is stupid and not sporting. Bait over a selected enviorment? Gotta be joking or just plain stoopid. Go kill a bear and brag. No such doings. 1010 -

I'm not into bear hunting either for some of the same reasons you listed, but who are we to make moral judgment on someone who wants to hunt bear. Maybe somebody wont like us deer hunting either, but I'm betting you wouldn't want YOUR sport questioned. 0 -

I go on an annual pilgrimage to sudbury ontario for bear and have been succesful for the past 3 years running. The exchange rate makes the trip very affordable the biggest expense was beer lol. I go on a guided 7 day hunt for around 600 american but there are places that offer non guided hunts and shorter hunts for less. Good luck on your hunt.

True hunters don't hunt to brag they hunt because those furry woodland creature taste so darn good, try 'em you might like them. I bet you are against shooting doe's too just remember shooting doe's is part of proper herd managment besides you can't boil antlers. Perhaps you should re-evaluate your old school train of thought.

I never considered hunting anything but native Missouri animals until the chance came up earlier this year to hunt hogs in texas. Challenging no but then neither is whitetail hunting. Anybody can shoot a deer. The reason I want to hunt bear is that it is a new adventure. Half the fun of the trip was going on the road with good friends. I have decided to hunt a different animal each year and bear seemed like one the less expensive. So this year Bear, next year maybe elk or antilope. Of course I will always be the first guy in the stand opening deer season in Mo. Thanks for all the info guys.

All western states don't have a draw for bear. In California thirty years ago a bear tag cost a dollar and no closed season. Now it runs about 90 days and costs $24 for a resident. So far this year in seven days I've seen 6 deer (does) and hundreds of bear tracks.
About 32 years ago they stopped allowing mountain lion hunting and they all feast on fawns, about 2 a week each. Bear running all over the place, even coming in to towns to swim in swimming pools and dine in garbage cans.
You buy the tag over the counter at Fish and Game when you buy your license.
Season closes this year when 1700 tags show up at DFG.
Oh yea, please hold off on the Kalifornia Komments. I'm not proud of this place either,- just stuck here.
Also you've never been allowed to hunt bear over bait or within 400 yards of a garbage dump.0 -
"Fall" bear permits (Sept) in Arizona are over-the-counter. Problem is, only certain areas are open. Also, they only allow so many sows to be harvested per area and you have to call G&F daily to see if the area you're hunting is closed to further hunting, or not.

When you walk up on them, poke with rifle barrel to get reaction, then roll over for gutting. Should be able to tell male from female.
