Proble with Pump Gun.-Win.Shotgun

I have a Winchester Pump that mis-fires occasionaly.This gun has probably not had more than 75 rounds shot out of it.The primers appear to have been dented deep enough. Is there someway of knowing how deep they should be dented?

Is there a method of measuring how deep my cases are dented?





This Gun has had the barrel interchanged with an identical Winchester Pump.Would this change the amount of Headspace.

    Did it ever misfire with the original barrel? It is possible that swapping the barrels has changed the headspacing just enough to cause the problem you are experiencing.

    What's occasionally mean? 1 out of 5, 1 out of 10? If what you say is true that the firing pins appears to indent the primer deep enough, are you shooting reloads? It has been known to happen, you could have some bad primers, even in factory loads. Does it happen with just one brand of shells, or different manufactures? Take one of the shells that didn't fire, and try it in a different gun. It's relatively easy to pull the breech bolt out and check the firing pin. The one thing I've learned is it's not a good idea to store your gun in the cocked position. Over time the hammer spring will lose strength. With out a little more info, on the shells you are using, it's kind of tough to determine the exact problem. Regards Dave

    went phesant hunt yesterday and my friend had the same prob with an auto loader winchester. He was shooting those fedral 2 3/4" #7.5 shot
    that you get 100 for $15 at wal-mart. After about 3 misfires I tried the 3 prehit shells in my 870 and they went off with no prob.I was thinking broken/worn firing pin but he started using my winchester brand
    2 3/4"#2 shot and he had no more probs.After the hunt he shot 100 rounds at clay targets. 50 of his and 50 of mine the result was all 50 winchester went off no prob.9 of the fedral did not go off in his gun but did in mine. What we would have to do is find lenth on those fedral then number each shell and try to fire in his gun then note the ones that dont fire.Then we could find out if it's head space or not. This is what you may have to do also. I must also say his winchester will only shoot 2 3/4
    and my 870 will use 2 3/4 and 3" hope this helped get you on your way to fixin the prob.

    I do know the Firing Pin is O.K.
