how do you disassemble it for cleaning? remove gas tube ?

Couldn't find anything on the net, regarding disassembly for the S & W 1000.
Best bet is to get hold of the N R A "Firearms Assembly Handbook" specifically for rifles & shotguns.
Believe you'l find the instructions in there. Your shotgun was made by Howa in Japan and sold by both S & W and Mossberg in this country, circa 1978/1988. The disassembly instructions might be listed under any one of the (3) names.
Best place to get the NRA handbook is at www.bookfinder.com lots of independent used book dealers advertise there. You get good prices and you can contact them to make sure the correct disassembly instructions are in the book their selling.
