Does anyone know where I can buy a good sporter (tapered)type barrel for a Ruger 10/22?

    i have a 10/22 and am looking for a new barrel, is length important?
    it's for target and hunting.

    Can you get replacement barrels in .17 HMR that will fit on the 10/22?

    The 17 HMR will not work on a regular 10/22. It would require the Magnum action.A 22" bbl would be the longest I would consider, but I see no real advantage over a 20".

    Hangfire is correct about the .17 hmr only working on the .22 mag receiver...
    I too was curious about this too, but I think ammo is more important on velocity and a good barrel with proper crowning will affect accuracy more than a couple inches extra length. I guess it boils down to how barrel-heavy you want it.

    I've heard that for a 22 a 20" barrel is all that is needed. I used to have a 10/22 powered up with a 20" barrel that would drive tacks and bought a 77/22 also tricked out with a 24" barrel and it isn't as good. I've seen in many articles that what happens when a low velocity rifle has a long barrel is that: when the rifle is fired the bullet finally reaches its maximum velocity in the barrel and when the gasses can't push it any faster the extra barrel length is just adding friction which would actually slow it down. Makes sense to me. What ya think?

    Boy was I off, it was the Magnum that was necked down not the Long Rifle....sorry.

    The barrel would have to be 71" long for a low velocity .22lr to reach its' maximum velocity INSIDE it according to my calculations.
    The 4"-8" difference between a factory 18" barrel and any aftermarket barrel wouldn't allow enough time in the bore to start slowing any cartridge other than a CB cap, and even then it wouldn't stop in the bore.

    you never stated if you are wanting a heavy barrel or the standard barrel. i have built a few ruger 10/22's by adding an adams & bennet
    heavy barrel in .920 diameter. these are 18" long and have a target crown. this length in that caliber shoots excellent. this barrel requires a stock made for the heavy barrel. hogue, butler creek etc..

    I bought a Butler Creek .920 barrel and stock from Cheaper Than Dirt about a year ago for 124 dollars + shipping.After that I put a Power Custom sear and hammer in and the more I shoot it,the better it groups.Don't know if it's me or the rifle.
