they use to build reproduction firearms. Any info would be helpful

    Just pick up a Ruger Mini 14 in stainless steel 223. caliber dont know how to down load pictures for it. a serial# 185-068xx Could some one tell me any information about the rifle the year it was made the model all information about the 223

    Welcome to the Forums: I believe you have what We call a Hardware Gun...Made from the late 1800's up thru the 1930's...Made in Belguim for the Hardware Stores and Mail Order House's...Sold under different Names and Logos...Sold from $10.50 upwards to $20.00 ....99% of the time they had Damascus Barrels and under NO circumstance Should they be Shot!!!!!! Damascus Barrels are Forge Welded, and tho they may appear Smooth and Pit Free...they have minute fissures in the Welds and under Pressure can and will eventually expand enough to unravel the barrels.....Parts are not available and will have to Be Made by a Gunsmith and Hand fitted to your Gun....and unless this particular Gun is something very special and Ornate with extrordinary Engraving and or Enlays...Its Not Worth the expense.......!

    I am afraid what I have to contribute won't help much, except to give you some insight.
    In the gunsmithing shop where I started working as a youngster, we had an old wooden barrel stuffed with more than 2 dozen such shotguns, clearly marked, "YOUR CHOICE--$5", and, lower down, "DO NOT SHOOT!!"
    Nowadays, it seems that everyone believes these to be valuable relics of some sort----

    My bet is that it really says "LACLEDE" on your gun.

    I would like to take this opportunity to elaborate just a bit on what CaptKirk stated...

    Damascus (a.k.a. Laminated, Twist, Stub, etc.) barreled shotguns should NEVER be fired with modern SMOKELESS powder shot shells... unless they have subjected to, and have passed proof testing for Nitro loads. Damascus barrels (in this country) were intended for use with blackpowder shells, and if the shotgun in question is in very good (or better condition) including the bores, there is no valid reason why they can not be safely used with the PROPER loads. It is a terribly bad myth that they will "blow up" if shot "under any circumstance".
