I've never use them myself but living real close to the state of MN where they do use them alot and having talk to several people over the years I can say that they do seem to work ! I talk to the guys down to my local Gander Mountain all the time (which is just across the river from Mn) and they all say the same thing , good little gun just limit your range and put them where they need to go, as long as the boy can do that he should be fine

Years ago, my dad watched my cousin drop one of the biggest deer he'd seen around here (so. MN) with a .410. Get different makes of ammo, tho and a couple different guns if possible to see which is more consistent. That and practice so he's comfortable and sure of himself.

The gent I hunt with is 88 and a couple years ago he shot a nice doe with one. As with any slug, it doesn't always drop them instantly. We found her stone dead about 25 yds away. (I go along to drag out what he shoots. He's a WWII vet and I don't give deer a very good chance if they step in front of him!)

I killed my first moose and my first caribou with a .410 "punkin ball".As I recall, neither went very far.

It ain't what you shoot, it's what you hit.
