deer rifle

im new to rifle hunting, been shooting slugs my whole life. i am now looking into purchasing a rifle. if anybody can give me any info on what caliber they recommend/shoot, which companies make quality, which make crap. i greatly appreciate all help!!

    Last year i bought a browning A-BOLT 270 WSM. I WAS GOING TO BUY A WINCHESTER IN THE SAME CAL. BUT WAS TALKED IN TO A BROWNING DON'T THINK I WENT WRONG ! BUT I PLAN ON GOING ON A HUNT,NOT KNOWING WHAT RANGE I WILL BE SHOOTING AT,I WAS HOPEING THAT THIS GUN WILL DO THE JOB! WILL BE USEING IT FOR BIG GAME.I AM FROM PENNSYLVANIA LAST YEAR I USED IT FOR WHITE TAIL I SHOT A REAL NICE BUCK WITH IT AT 170 YARDS USEING A 130 GR.BALISTIC SILVER TIP ROUND.DO YOU THINK THIS GUN & ROUND IS A GOOD MATCH FOR WHAT I WANT TO USE IT FOR OR SHOULD I CHANGE SOMETHING.

    tj,--you need to tell us more. The .270 is adequate for almost everything on this continent, but you must shoot the right kind of bullet!!
    What kind of "big" game might you be hunting?

    tj, I'm not a "big game" hunter but looking at the Winchester ammo guide for your rifle, I'd use the 150 grain bullet in the factory .270WSM load. If you handload your ammo, I'd look for a recommendation for a good 150 gr. or heavier Nosler, Sierra, or Speer bullet recommendation from some of the elk/small bear hunters on this forum.

    i would use a 150grain spire pointed loaded for big game as your shots may be longer anbd the game will be bigger

    Elk needs closer in than 250 yds., black bear OK, brownies, grizzly..............remember, they fight back, too small for my comfort. My opinion.

    If the shots are going to be longer, I would think you would want to go with 130 grain because it is flatter shooting and wont drop as fast.

    A lot of my buddies use a .270 because they like the lower recoil. And it works great in the Sierra Nevada Mountains as most deer shots are not very long. BUT out west here, and especially if you want to drop an Elk or a Bear, I would not even think about a .270. I find that for what you have to penetrate in these larger animals you have to be much closer than 250 yards with a .270 and it is not always certain that you will drop them in one shot. A pissed-off elk or bear is not what you want to have within 250 yards of you. At least the Elk will probably run, but the bear may very well come after you.

    I would suggest that you keep it for deer, but if you want to hunt larger game out here that you go with a .308 or above (I use a .308) and think about a 165 - 180 grain bullet. I have recently taken a liking to the Hornaby V-Max's over the Sierras. At this point it is just antidotal, but I feel I get much more accuracy and umph with the V-Max over others.

    Of course, this is only one guy's opinion, and he could be wrong.

    (P.S. From behind the Liberal Curtain, just a word of advice....stay away from Kalifornia if you want to hunt. The laws to bring a weapon into the state will ruin any fun you may have.)
