C&R License - California

How difficult is it to acquire a Curio&Relic license
in California ? I tried looking at the CA gov site
and, if it's there, it's been tucked away to make it
fairly difficult to find.

Granted, CA has restrictive laws and even a 50+ year
old firearm can't have 11 or more round magazines,
bayonets, etc. Let's assume thats "ok". Is a C&R
license a r-e-a-l pain to get in California ?

Any insights appreciated.

    You go through the ATF to get it. Normally will take 8 weeks to get.

    Your supposed to get a 'Certificate of Elgibility' from the California Department of Justice before you use your license to buy things...It's recommended you get it.

    All it will do is notify the State that you have a Federal License to purchase so they can keep tabs on you.

    Will cost you $30 for the C&R license and well worth it.

    No more background checks, no more stupid trigger locks on purchases, no more taxes on purchases...handguns will be mailed to you overnight, rifles usually take a week to get out here.



    It's the only way California residents can get handguns not approved by DOJ.

    Curio and relic license holders are allowed to purchase more than one handgun a month in Cali:

    Hello altos,

    While I am not 100% sure what the state of California may or may not try to add on in the way of restrictions or regulations, a Curio and Relic license (C&R) is a FEDERAL Firearms License (FFL Class 03). When I applied for, and subsequently received my C&R license in the state of Washington, the state was to the best of my knowledge, completely unaware of of my doing so. That would not be the case for a Class 01 FFL, which also requires a business license. All you have to do to get your C&R license, is go to the BATFE's web site, download the application, fill it out, send it in with your check, and wait about 6 weeks. Maybe some of the fellows who live in the PRK will have a different answer...

    The main restriction on a C&R license in California is that the law states that all firearms sales must go through a dealer. There is an exception for C&R rifles and shotguns that are over 50 years old. These are the only firearms you can have delivered directly to you. As far a California is concerned, it doesn't matter if you have a C&R license or not. That is a Federal matter.

    A Certificate of Eligibility is not required by the State and, in my opinion, is not worth the money ($75.00 for the first year). All it gets you is an exemption from the 10 day wait when buying a C&R firearm from a California dealer and an exemption from the "one handgun a month" law.

    I checked out the site noted (thanks !) but it is vague. It states that ALL firearms must go through a DROS check. In other areas it states that firearms (non-concealable) over 50 years old are exempt.

    EOD Guy is on the right track. I've checked into it before and all a C&R does is allow you to buy guns on the BATF C&R list directly IFFFFFFFFFFFFF they are over 50 years old and as you found they aren't prohibited in some other Ca. law somewhere else.

    If you're into collecting old guns then you'll be all set, but if it ain't 50 years old it will be worthless to you.

    To add to this take for instance the Yugo Sks. ATF has deemed it is a C&R although it isn't that old due to the fact that there are so few of them.
    If you have a C&R license in California 99% of the importers and FFL's won't ship this firearm to you as it has the grenade launcher.
    Some offer to modify it so it will be California legal but then won't sell it to a C&R holder as the firearm has been modified.

    You need to look around as there are importers and sellers that see the law differently and will still ship the Yugo Sks to California C&R holders.

    It's all interpretation.

    Soooooo...... it appears... that I should take this all to mean that if I spend the $30 for a Federal C&R license and the item I am buying is

    #1 on "the list" as a C&R
    #2 doesn't violate any other California law (high cap mag, etc)

    then... I do not have to go through a dealer nor DROS as that information is already given as part of the C&R process. Therefore (he typed, trying to make it painstakingly clear to himself) if a seller states "FFL/C&R license required" then I am legit, above board, no issues.

    You got it. Almost all the C&R stuff listed here is making a profit for a dealer. You would go through:

    to get things dirt cheap. Rare items are available here though and this would be the means to get rid of items you no longer wish to keep. Century Arms has a sale right now, 3 CZ52's for $300, not bad for a handgun. M91's are going for $60. Interordnance will ship a Yugo sks to you for under $150 in excellent shape.
