Skeet, trap or clays

Hello.
I was interesting in trying some sporting clays. I shot some ducks and pheasant with my Stoger O/U. can some one explain what is the difference between Skeet Trap and sporting clays. My local target range told me that they only have skeet and trap. please help as I am yellow head when it comes to this sport

    Skeet is a game of shooting at clay targets from 20 yards or less. The shots are either going away / comming at you, to passing shots. So a gun that has open chokes (Skeet or cylinder) and a short barrel (26" is fine), and will fire two rounds quickly fill the bill.

    Sporting Clays is a game of shooting that will present "real game" type of shots. The ranges will very wildly for close to + 40 yards.
    Sporting Clays is normally set up so that you walk to differant stands and there will a couple of differant target types. It is very tough until you learn the target picture of the differant types of shots. A gun for this type of shooting would likely have a flat rib, choice of choke tubes, and be 28" to 30" barrel(s), and fire two rounds quickly.

    Both are very fun, and I would say that skeet is less difficult for me that sporting clays.

    Trap is the game of shooting at going away / rising targets. There is 5 shooting stations and you shoot 5 rounds at each station. This is a longer range shooting and most use modified or full chokes (full chokes is my choice). A single shot (or for doubles 2 shots) heavy gun that shoots high (high post rib) is the most widely used shot gun.

    My advice is to find a gun that fits, try each game, and then practice, practice, .......

    Actually you did ask about trap. Trap is a shooting exercise where all of the birds are rising from the ground and flying away from you at various angles. A skeet type of shot gun will work, unless you are shooting at competition level.

    Sporting clay targets vary in size and shape. 110mm trgets are the standard type targets that are shot in both skeet and trap and they are also used in sporting clays. Other targets in sporting clays are 90mm which fly faster than the 110mm targets and then there are 60mm targets which are virtual rockets and can be difficult to hit. There are also battu's which will turn in the air when they reach the apex of the arch, and of coarse there is the rabbit which is a thick disk that is thrown so the target rolls and bounces arcross the ground.

    In sporting Clays you should also hold the shotgun, and not mount it until after you call "Pull".

    In many cases on a sporting clays range the thrower or trap will be in an area where it cannot be seen by the shooter, so it is a curtisy to shout "is the trapper ready" before you call "pull".

    Just to update things, warcrob, the sporting clays assoc. now accepts a "ready mount" like trap. I learned, as you probably did, to keep the butt of the gun elbow height or below also. I felt it somewhat downgraded the sport, but with all the whining.........

    Generally a trap gun also has a high rib, i.e. shoots high, where sporting clays and skeet guns are set up similiar to field guns.

    I always enjoy skeet or sporting clays more,as you have to practice all disciplines, speeds and angles.
