SKS Good Rifle To Buy?
I have always kinda wanted an AK-47 just because they are so popular and they shoot about the cheapest center-fire ammo in the world. But I just never wanted one bad enough to pay the $300.00+ price (is that in the price range?) But I have been seeing a lot about the SKS and can someone tell me if that is a good gun and if so what version from what country and pre-ban or post-ban and in what price range? Thanks for any help.

Any of the chrome barrel ones are good, ie Russian, Albanian, Norinco, etc.
The yugos are priced cheaper, usually from $125 to $195 with accessories, are readily available and shoot the 7.62x39 ammo. If you can find a North Korean or Viet, they are more rare and worth more money.

I've got several sks and they are fun. I like my norincos the best. I also have a yugo and its not bad. I wouldn't pay more than 200 for any sks and if you get a yugo don't pay more than 130 or 140

GET A SAIGA! Russian made on Russian AK receivers, detachable 10 round mags, accurate, reliable, shoot 7.62x39 ammo which is plenty cheap and you don't have to mess around with stripper clips like with the SKS

I just shot my Norinco for the first time yesterday and had a hoot. I was reinacting VN with my SKS and a CAR15[8D]
The open sites on the SKS/AK suck. With the CAR at 80 yds I had no trouble busting clays laying on tall a dirt bank. With the SKS I really had to take my time and still only hit maybe once in 5 shots. Both from front sandbag.

I used to have a norinco and remember it being a worthwhile rifle to own.Too bad i had to get rid of mine.[:D]

About 6 months or so before Clinton banned their import, Norinco sent in some SKS's that were factory made to accept an AK mag.
The rifle was stocked for Americans, a bit longer buttstock, and had the short barrel.
I'm not sure of the model, but these are really nice little weapons with the benefit of accuracy (better than an AK) and ability to accept standard 5, 20, and 30 round mags.

I think some of the early norinco's had a bolt stop problem that was reccomended to be fixed (I think the stop was brittle in some guns). Never had probs. with mine, and was actually a real shooter at 80 to 100yds. open sighted. I did have a paratrooper nonfolding stock. You could extend the length and was a whole lot more fun to shoot when it fit.
You can also get various pads, ect to extend the wood stocks as well. That's probably the biggest thing I'd change. The trigger pull is good on some, squishy/hard on others. I think there's a better trigger group out there, of course at extra cost. Had to have a Russian, so that's what I have now. Still needs a longer stock, but it is more nicely finished than a Norinco.0 -
A FEW SHORT YRS AGO I COULD BY THEM FOR ABOUT $75 - WISH I HAD BOUGHT A BUNCH, THEY ARE FUN & CHEAP TO SHOOT & YOU CAN SPORTERIZE EAZY, NOW IF YOU CAN FIND ONE FOR $150 BUY IT!
